Hugo

mate: Artura

Hugo was born into an industrious earth clan. His father, Forge, was the chief and unlike Hugo in every way. While Hugo was sensitive and gentle, Forge was proud and commanding. He spoke of a future where Hugo would take over in his stead but seldom asked what Hugo wanted.

Throughout Hugo's childhood, Forge piled expectations upon him. In turn, Hugo withdrew. For he did not wish to lead, preferring to talk to his fellow dragons as equals rather than command them.

Forge often scolded Hugo for his lack of authority and said that he must harden himself as stone.

Hugo wished to stand up for himself, but he shrank beneath Forge's scrutiny.

So, instead, he fled. Hugo knew not where he was going, but he would not stop until he escaped Dragonhome.

For days, he travelled by night, treasuring the quiet and philosophizing to himself but knew he would eventually need to settle in a new clan.

Hugo found this clan deep within the Scarred Wasteland. It was called Sanctuary and unlike the rest of the Scarred Wasteland, it boasted ample resources and plenty of space.

Humbly, Hugo requested to settle within it. Having grown accustomed to the night, he offered to watch over the clan as they slept in return for food and shelter.

The Sanctuary's leader, Millicent, accepted, and Hugo perched himself atop her manor so he may take his role as guardian.

Hugo kept to himself at first, content to oversee the clan in the night hours and ponder on his own, but soon he became melancholy, often looking in the direction of Dragonhome.

Most dragons slept during these spells of sadness, but one was awake and noticed Hugo's demeanor.

Her name was Sybil, and she was the Sanctuary's resource manager. She was also born outside the Scarred Wasteland, hailing from the Tangled Wood. She asked Hugo why he waxed so melancholic, and he admitted to leaving his clan on bad terms. He recalled the confrontation with Forge and his regret of not speaking up for himself, wondering if things could have ended differently if he had.

Sybil claimed that she did not know the answer. For she did not know Forge nor Dragonhome. Instead, she shared of her own past, how she abandoned her cruel mother and passive father. She had no regrets of cutting ties with her mother, but she recalled moments of kindness from her father. One day, she put her thoughts in writing and sent the letter. Her father responded and she learned of how he had grown and stood up against his mate, apologizing that he had not done so sooner. Sybil forgave him and they now enjoy a regular correspondence. Sybil added that she could not promise a similar ending for Hugo but encouraged him to put his feelings in writing regardless.

Hugo followed her advice and wrote a letter to Forge in which he detailed his struggles and all that he feared saying aloud.

Some weeks later, Forge arrived at the Sanctuary. He approached Millicent and asked if he could speak to Hugo.

Petrified, Hugo slunk to the shadows. He'd have stayed there if Sybil had not been at his side, urging him to step forward and promising to wait for him, whatever happened.

Taking a deep breath, Hugo emerged and faced Forge once more.

Forge bowed deeply. He admitted that he had been stubborn and should have listened to Hugo. He apologized for forcing his ideals upon and asked if there was any way Hugo could forgive him.

With tears in his eyes, Hugo granted Forge forgiveness and they embraced.

Forge stayed some time, reacquainting himself with Hugo and learning of the Scarred Wasteland. Significantly, he conversed with Millicent and the two built an alliance between their clans, expanding the Sanctuary's relations.

Eventually, Forge returned to Dragonhome but promised to write to Hugo.

Today, Hugo eagerly awaits letters from his father and no longer fears sharing his hopes and dreams.
