Flycatcher Greenroot Janustrap Venus Flytrap
"Every misunderstood plant has a place in
this world, but their purpose may be hidden
if you do not look beneath the surface."

Attentive | Shy | Obliging
Dionaea is an expert on the cultivation of flytraps and other carnivorous plants, as well as a talented botanical artist. His deep fascination with this strange misunderstood flora began as a youngling when he was often teased about his short chin-plates and large teeth. Lonely, the snapper turned to the undesirable plants for comfort, feeling a kinship as he fed and watered them, taking pride as they grew healthy and strong.

Nurturing the clumps of flytraps, sundews and pitcher plants that grew near his den, Dionaea found them very interesting and beautiful, and spent hours drawing and documenting their development in great detail. But as his garden of carnivorous plantlife grew and spread, nearby lairs began to complain; the local bug populations were depleting due to the number of hungry flytraps, leaving insect-eaters and entomologists frustrated.

Oblivious to the growing angst, Dio was horrified one morning to see huge swathes of his flycatcher garden pulled up by the roots and piled onto a cart to be taken away for mulching. The upset snapper was told that his plants were a nuisance to the community and that if he wished to save them he would have to replant them elsewhere, away from other dens. Feeling more unwelcome than ever, Dionaea took the cart and set off to find a new home for them.

The snapper headed toward a large swamp on the outskirts of a wildwood. Arriving late at night, Dio busied himself straight away bathing his plants in the murky waters, until he noticed a pair of bright green eyes watching him from across the boggy shore. A tall ridgeback covered in plants waded over, trailing pond weeds with every stroke. On his back rode a strange and quiet creature with the head of toadstool and the body of a small skydancer. The taller dragon stood next to the tired snapper and offered a spikey claw in welcome.

He introduced himself as Muskeg, a swamp shaman, and his young friend as Toadcap. Muskeg and Toadie were also unwanted creatures - the eccentric ridgeback due to the pungent rafflesia flowers that grew on his back and his tendencies toward protecting even the most noisome flora and fauna, and Toadcap for the mushroom curse she was afflicted with. The swamp had become their haven and they dedicated themselves to caring for its inhabitants, living closer to nature and feeling their elemental magic harmonise with the natural world.

They welcomed Dionaea and helped him to plant the flycatchers all over the mire, where they bloomed magnificently. Living freely with his new friends, Dio has allowed himself to become part of the bog - sporting a thick mane of weeds and a waistcoat of vibrant flytraps. Their sweet nectar attracts colourful butterflies which follow the snapper wherever he goes, and his flightless wings have became perches for snakes and birds. With mentoring from the shaman the bond Dio has with the plants has grown incredibly strong; the snapper can now control his flycatchers and have them defend against poachers, restoring the peace and beauty of the everglades for all to enjoy.
