Elena gave him the idea. He'd never give her any credit, of course - he was too proud - and at any rate, it was he who thought of it. Elena gave him the inspiration. As much as he fancied himself an engineer, he had to admit his failure at the one key engineering feat that sustained the clan: the redirection and maintenance of the waterfall at the clan's doorstep. Elena had succeeded not by dint of ingenuity or resourcefulness, but strong water magic. Kaivu was never satisfied with the solution - there had to be something simpler, more elegant - but he had to admit it worked, and well. What else could elemental magic do? What other problems, big and small, could it resolve? And how could it profit the clan? |
While Siana is the social leader of the clan, Kaivu is the economic one. Ambitious and eager for recognition and respect, he pushes to expand the clan's prominence and influence. Although fairly untalented in most respects, he can keenly sense others' magic. This ability serves him well in selecting new clan members according to their magical talents; feeling the shape of their magic also allows him to train others to use their magic for particular practical purposes, even if their element is alien to him. He calls himself a "researcher" in that he tests what kinds of magic can be used to certain effects, but he is more of a coach, directing others' talents to suit the clan's collective goals.
