Skidatel flinched away from Iremia as she went to take his hands. She stopped. "What?" she asked. "Iremia... I kill everything I touch. Not just plants." Instead of filling with worry, her eyes softened with sympathy. "Is it immediate?" "No, not... not for bigger animals, like dragons. It slowly sucks the life force out of you. Kills you in about thirty seconds." A silence fell between them. Then, she asked, "When was the last time someone held your hands?" Skidatel shook his head. "I honestly don't remember. Long before the curse took hold." "Skidatel... I am willing to suffer to give you something nobody else will give you," Iremia said. She grasped his hands before he could draw away and he stilled, meeting her gaze worriedly. Her eyes lit up with pain, but she didn't let go. Then she leaned forward and embraced him. Another dragon's warmth, another dragon's heart beating against his, was something he hadn't felt in so long he had forgotten what it felt like. For a small moment, it was amazing. But he could feel her life force draining away from her. He pushed her away. |

Just from that single embrace, Iremia realized how his curse worked. It drained the energy from the things it contacted until they had nothing life-supporting left within them. She realized that due to her own magical curse, she would not be able to die from his. His curse would try and try to kill her, but it would not succeed, because it wasn't touching the tree her life force was tied to. As long as the tree was unharmed, she would live. It didn't matter if she was harmed; the tree would stay safe. So, despite the torment of touching him, the brutal exhaustion his curse put upon her, she could touch him safely. She was the only one who could touch him safely, now. |

Skidatel Skidatel was cursed so that everything he touches wilts and dies. Iremia found that she was a loophole, as her life force was tied to a tree. Unless he touched the tree, she would never be able to fully die from his touch. Therefore, she chose to be his friend, to suffer just so that he could experience the warmth of another dragon occasionally. After all, she is the only one who can do that for him. |
