While the eleven major unanimously known deities of Sornieth wield the most influence over the planet, the rest of the world's magic is not evenly spread to all others. While the major deities are responsible for the large elemental phenomenons such as the tides, winds, snow, and so on, smaller miracles fall to lesser deities.

The application of the title "deity" to these dragons can be contested. While their lifespans have been observed to be impossibly long for such powerful beings, they still do expire eventually. Such a death is usually followed by the birth of another similarly powerful dragon within the next decade who grows to fill the niche.

The time without these minor deities can be tumultuous for the region in which they resided. The loss of a guardian of stars can result in the gradual shifting of their appearance in the sky, making navigation difficult. Regions lacking dragons who guide migrating endemic life, their very essence serving as a landmark, can see immense losses in animal populations as large groups of species are unsuccessful in their migrations. Rolling hills of wildflowers and bees can spend years as barren land if lacking a regional deity to promote growth. But the deities are always reborn, and in helping the area recover, they establish their reign.

Rubus is one such minor deity, just beginning her duties. Initially quiet and unsure of herself, the Coatl started small, promoting the return of brambles to the seaside region in which she was born. Small, hard, unripe berries dotted the bushes. Enough for birds and bugs and a welcome returning resource for them, but any dragon would turn their nose up at such bitter, perpetually unripe fruit. Well, nearly any dragon.

A few months into Rubus's first season, she knew she wasn't doing the best job. Brambles and vines failed to produce a single ripe berry, and the mammals of the area prepared for another year of struggling to get by on grasses and seeds. But it was better than before she started, right? This was enough for now, surely? She convinced herself of that, for a time. Until the Tundra moved in on the beach.

At first, Rubus paid the purple Tundra little mind. There were a few clans dotted throughout her territory, established before her hatching. Many had already set up farms themselves, the harvesting of which took much less effort than foraging an equal amount of food from Rubus's berries. But the Tundra didn't have that edge. Rubus watched her with increasing interest, especially as others joined her to form a small clan. Despite the difficulty they faced in finding food for the clan's herbivores, their leader, the purple Tundra, remained steadfast in her decision to settle in dens bored into the seaside cliff.

And Rubus felt awful. She admired the Tundra following her heart, and the followers she had picked up believing in her. The clan was settling and growing established, but how much easier would it have been for them if she had done her job better? In addition to her guilt, the Coatl felt something new as well: a deep longing to belong as every member of the new clan seemed to. And this motivated her. Rubus spent the next several days practicing and perfecting her unique magic. Berries ripened on her brambles at her touch, and her magic helped stave off rot and fungus. As she worked, the Coatl gathered, filling baskets with her best work. And one day, she took a deep breath and introduced herself to the newly formed clan, presenting her gifts.

--

Despite a moderate lack of self-confidence, her status as a minor deity and the fact that she joined the clan so early naturally led Rubus to acquire a leadership position within Gestalt. However, she sees no task as beneath her, and will often join scouting missions, make potions, work with the mages, or do anything else where her assistance is appreciated. She has a very calm and reassuring energy about her, due to her soft-spoken nature and desire to be helpful, and is quick to praise good work and strong effort.

Her closest friends in the clan are the other leaders, particularly Purble, as well as Kintsugi, Aster, and Belladonna. She was close with Noble before her disappearance, and grows worried for the Banescale as time goes on. Despite Nameless being another minor deity serving overlapping territory, Rubus has never met the Tundra, as the older dragon has chosen a much more reclusive lifestyle.

My deepest, most sincere thanks to the friends who helped me bring her home.

Ode to Ripen a Blackberry wrote:
I’m the matron-queen of failure, apparently, &
my emotion overtakes a fringe
of berries by the river:
your sudden hungry mouth
criyng for me like so many birds
the blackjuice-stained tracks you leave on
the song of blackberry: a wanton cry, a shivering for ripeness,
when I touched you with a mother’s touch
you turned away.
Your buds are the pulse of my nights and days.
You are my priest and my poet,
and I carelessly hope to delight you,
although the pursuit shies away from me
and leaves the skin green-red and raw.
I am floating in the scented air
like a fly on an unripe blackberry.
That is, unsatisfied, ungorged.
I want to drown in cultivation and call it
the best decision of my life,
I want to lift an eyelid
and let the juice come in.
Every step forwards is a tiny ripe blackberry.
Every step backwards is crushing a blackberry.
Some day I hope to create an excitement for a blackberry
that freshens the breath as well as feeding it.
I am getting too ahead of myself;
when I checked this morning I felt the sorrow coming in
like rot on leaves.
Please, promise you would become something perfect
if I just did well enough.
Please, promise you would.
If not there is nothing to work for.
If not, the curling of the stems like a swan’s neck
means nothing.
You there, blackberry, green as failure,
half-formed and drooping in the violence of my disappointment,
have made the miraculous truth sluice through:
I am nothing without you,
and you are without anything
but yet another distant anguish.
A harbringer of changelessness
soon to come.
