“Of ghastly marble were its walls and its towers, its columns, domes, and pavements... And overhead, scarce ten degrees from the zenith, glowed that watching Pole Star. Long did I gaze on the city, but the day came not."

OLATHOË

Olathoë is a city in Dreamland, located in the land of Lomar on the plateau of Sarkis. Nestled between two mountains, the city was full of marble towers, citadels, and fortifications. It is very near the pole, which makes it very cold. In winter, it would be left in twilit darkness, even during the day, so that the stars were always visible. The city looks ethereal and ghostly during these months. During the summer, the city would be under constant, pale sunlight.

The city is inhabited by Lomarian refugees from Zobna, which was overtaken by advancing glacier fields. The Lomarians were tall, serious, bearded men with long robes. The city eventually falls to invading Inutos, the ancient ancestors to the Eskimos. A guardian from the waking world kept watch in the tower, but he was put under a spell by the Pole Star:

"Slumber, watcher, till the spheres/ Six and twenty thousand years/ Have revolv'd, and I return/ To the spot where now I burn."

Daikos, warrior mage of Olathoë, a grim and fierce protector of the citadel. Called to arms when the wicked Inutos planned an attack, the skydancer put on his skull helmet and donned his shadow and ice raiment; able to combine the two elements into tendrils of frozen darkness which he could use to hurl invaders off when they attempted to scale the high marble walls.

His commander, Alos, left to speak with the tower guard, wanting a watch set so that they would know when the Inutos were approaching. Daikos was uneasy as the tower was manned by a dragon from the waking world, and dreamers were not as resistant to the magic of the dreaded Pole Star. It shone down with its malevolent eye twinkling, watching the panicked city below with hateful mirth. Polaris was a trickster and its presence felt like a very bad omen.

The guardian of the tower did his best to remain vigilant, his sharp eyes roving the landscape for signs of enemy advancement. But his eyelids soon began to droop and an unnatural slumber came upon him, and as he tried to fight against it he heard evil words drifting down to him from the cold night sky. Polaris put the guard into an enchanted sleep so that he could not warn the Olathoën soldiers of the Inutos arrival, and the garrison were taken by surprise and ultimately overcome.

Daikos eventually escaped when no more could be done for the city. Grieved at the fall of Olathoë the skydancer raged at the Pole Star, cursing it with all that was left of his strength and magic. A spell of pure hatred, as cold as the hardest glacier and as dark as the deep places of the woods, was cast into the heavens. Polaris, mocking the fury of Daikos, laughed insanely until the dragon's hex fell upon it. Writhing, the damnable Pole Star felt its internal energies dim, a frigid iciness spreading rapidly and turning its celestial body as black as tar.

Bound by frosted shadows Polaris was forced to turn its face away, banished until it could undo the curse. The remains of beloved Olathoë were no longer bathed in sickening starlight, but the devastation was too much for Daikos to bear, and the victory against the Pole Star had come too little too late. With a heavy heart the dragon took to the empty skies, wanting to leave the ruined marble city behind and taking with him only the memories of its glory days; the shining towers and stone pillars, and the brave warriors who had fought in vain to defend it.
