"What doesn't kill you makes you mutate."
╰───────────────────────────────────╯

Just another step backwards. One tiny step and he would lose his balance. Then everything would be over for him. He knew that.

He could feel the heat of the Wyrmwound at his back and he heard the bubbling and gurgling of the crater as if it were speaking to him trying to convince him to throw himself down of his own free will and drown himself in the plague cauldron.

Just one more small step...

He tensed every muscle to remain steadfast. Just don't back away or lose your footing.
He bared his teeth, but in the eyes the young mirror looked into, he could see that his counterpart seemed completely unfazed by any threatening gestures.
The eyes he looked into belonged to a male snapper. They were cold and at the same time filled with senseless, mindless anger. He also bared his teeth now. Saliva foamed at the corners of his large mouth and spilled over his lips.
He was ill. Some disease had crept into his skull and begun to eat away at his brain.
From the color of his eyes the mirror could tell that his opponent wasn't from this land. He was an earthborn.
Perhaps he had become infected with something in the vastness of the Plaguebringer's empire.

That's how it had to be.

Yes.

Snappers were peaceful dragons and avoided conflict if fighting wasn't necessary.
So why else would a snapper rabidly hunt a mirror and drive it high up to the end of Rotrock Rim?

This one small step...

With a loud rumble, the massive and heavy body of the earth dragon now reared up. He stood on his hind legs and prepared for another attack. It would be a fierce attack with his front paws that the mirror would not be able to escape.
Even if he had wanted to, his wings would no longer have had the strength to carry him away from here. The chase had cost him too much effort and here, where he was now standing, so close to the edge of the Wyrmwound, he simply wouldn't have had enough space to make an attempt to fly.

He tried to duck away as he saw the huge forelegs coming towards him, but it was useless. The snapper hit the mirror's side with incredible force. The four eyed dragon stumbled and wobbled. His hind legs slipped away and took an uncontrolled step backwards. He slipped. In a panic he tried to grab the edge of the sickness-filled cauldron. But he couldn't find any purchase.

It was that one step, that step, that was too much. And he didn't even take that step of his own free will.

He fell. A loud scream of helplessness and fear escaped his throat before it became even hotter around him than it had been before. The Wyrmwound greedily devoured him, suffocating his scream by flooding his lungs with corruption.
He felt his body burning and seeming to be torn apart at the same time. His muscles were stretched and his bones threatened to shatter under the force.

The snapper was still standing at the edge of Rotrock Rim, unable to hear or see anything that was happening in the cauldron.
He had lost sight of his enemy the moment he crashed and was now fuming even more with anger. His mind was so clouded by illness that he didn't even seem to understand what had just happened.

He turned his head angrily and let his eyes wander around frantically when the Wyrmwound suddenly spoke up again.
Like a geyser, a wave of red-greenish liquid shot roaring upwards. Two huge wings, claws and two tails unfolded in it. And when the plague geyser swelled again, it also revealed two heads sharing one body.
Two heads, two pairs of horns sitting on top of them, five eyes glowing with the colors of the Wyrmwound and two mouths full of sharp, yellow teeth surrounded by a caustic smoke that billowed from the two throats of the dragon that was now floating high up over the Wyrmwound.

The sight of this new dragon that had so suddenly appeared caused the snapper to take a fighting stance again. This strange dragon, however, licked both of its lips before turning upside down and swooping down towards the snapper. It grabbed the earth dragon in its long claws. Pushed him back to the base of the cauldron, shot up a second time and attacked again.
His mouths bit mercilessly into the snapper's tough, stony skin and didn't let go until his tongues tasted blood.

That step backwards. In the end it had been a step forward. A step into a new life, a new existence.

Evolution.

The two-headed dragon stood triumphantly on its hind legs and stretched its necks towards the sky to begin its loud screech. The snapper lying on the ground in front of him no longer moved. He had lost the fight.

There aren't many laws under the rule of the Plaguebringer, but there is this one, the most important of all laws in probably all of Sornieth:
Only those who know how to adapt will emerge victorious in the end.
And only for the strongest will the sun rise again the next day.

Valerian was originally created by the Plaguebringer as a mirror and was called Ghoul.
Before he was pushed into the Wyrmwound and turned into an aberration, he had met Idris and fathered two sons with her.
Albus, who left the Plague realm and now serves the Shadowbinder, and Wajcha, who after a long journey and the search for his purpose found his way back to the clan with which Idris and Valerian now live.

Ghoul changed his name to Valerian after he'd mutated.
