When her magic began manifesting, Lull’s tutors quickly did their best to snuff it out, discouraging her bursts of joy which raised up clover from the ground.

It was so alien and beautiful… living deep in one of the most inhospitable areas of the Southern Icefield, she had never seen something so lush. It wasn’t real clover, just a construct of her magic, but it looked soft and she wished she could touch it.

“You’re to be a medic… healers don’t use magic like that,” her tutor said, as gently as he could.

And of course she was to be a healer; she was born to the two most accomplished battle medics out of the Fortress of Ends, with no clutch-mates to share the burden of carrying on their legacy.

Despite being the sole heir to such a birthright, Lull did not know her parents well. When he saw them in passing glances over the years, they were kind… but occupied with their duties.

Even without knowing any life different from her own, she felt their absence… but it couldn’t be helped.

But it didn’t stop her from seeking love and approval, so she attached herself to her tutors and did everything she could to earn their praises.

After all, she was young and showed impressive potential. The magic she was learning to control as a hatchling wasn’t specific to her destined occupation. She could build up her foundations and hopefully her skills in healing would follow.

Occasionally, her magic would shimmer dangerously around her, but it was infrequent and easily pushed out of her mind.

As she matured, she struggled to meet expectations. Lull had all of the qualities that should have made her an excellent medic: she was creative, dangerously clever, and notoriously level-headed in a crisis.

She told herself again and again that once she was fully trained, her doubts would be gone. She entered the final leg of her healer training upon being accepted to the medical corps.

But healing was difficult; she felt as if she were flying against the wind in a storm.

As her cohort of fellow trainees were bolstered by praise from their mentors as they successfully worked to heal increasingly difficult cases from the battlefront, Lull dug in her claws and pushed harder to keep up.

Though her primary duty was healing, all battle medics received some combat training as a means of self preservation.

And in this area, Lull was not without her own strengths. Her lithe form and narrow wingspan gave her an incredible edge with maneuvering through dangerous situations. While she could still be overpowered by some, Lull was agile enough to avoid having to engage in contests that were purely based on strength and size.

She could outpace dragons who were significantly larger than she was, despite her dwindling morale in regards to her magic ever fully manifesting, she was a confident fighter.

Confidence, however, would not save Lull.

28259.png
35247.png 22387.png It was a beautifully clear night, with a bright full moon hanging low in the sky and distant stars lighting the practice arena.

Lull was excited. It was time to partake in graded matches to prove that she and the other trainees were ready to begin training at the actual war front, rather than being kept sheltered and safe leagues behind the lines.

There were, of course, a few rules. No teeth, no claws, and no intentional deadly blows. But Lull’s favorite rule was than no magic was involved, as even healing magic could be directed in nefarious ways, which meant it was one of the few areas where her unmanifested magic didn’t place her at a significant disadvantage to the other trainees.

The matches were judged by a small panel of their mentors, based mostly on their ability to demonstrate that they could find a quick way to subdue their opponent, meaning that a match could end quickly without much harm.
They were medics, after all, and the purpose of training was really just to confirm they could defend themselves and retreat.

Lull’s excitement faltered a bit when she received her match. She was paired to spar against a large Pearlcatcher, who was known for his erratic temper in the ring and his sour demeanor upon being bested.

The match started predictably. The Pearlcatcher was attempting to use his bulk, while she used her agility to avoid engaging with him in a way that would put her at a disadvantage. She knew that if she bided her time, he would give in to his frustration and open an opportunity for her to end the match without much of a tussle.

Her prediction was correct. After a few minutes of unsuccessfully trying to engage with her, he charged at her. The charge was formidable, but entirely graceless, and as she navigated out of his way, she whipped her tail across his throat.

That was enough to demonstrate that she would have had an opening to neutralize him; a sharp whistle cut through the air, signaling that the match was over.

Lull turned to look up at the mentors, who confirmed that she was victorious, and she allowed herself a moment of pride. She took a deep breath of the cool night air and observed the moon looked a little brighter than usual.

And abruptly, that deep breath was knocked out of her as the Pearlcatcher tackled her, bowling them both to the ground as he viciously bit into the tender junction where her neck met her shoulder and raked his claws down her back.

She didn’t even have time to process what had happened before she felt her magic explode through her, whiting out her vision, as she scrabbled against ground and the weight of her opponent to right herself.

Lull barely registered the pain from the Pearlcatcher’s attack as she pulled herself up, realizing her magic has finally fully manifested. The magic was tangible in the air around her and she turned to look at her attacker, her stomach instantly dropping.

The Pearlcatcher had been thrown when her magic erupted out of her… but instead of just seeing him simply tossed to the side by that force, he was held to the ground by foliage, the likes of which she had never seen during the course of her entire life in the Southern Icefield.

As she stared at the havoc her magic had wreaked, the Pearlcatcher unnervingly still and the floor of the area ripped apart, a small winged creature fluttered into her view, floating around her like an aura. And just as it circled past her, the edges of her vision narrowed and the world faded into darkness.

Lull floated under the surface of consciousness. Her thoughts were unsubstantial and distant, but she kept returning to the heavy fog of disappointment; the path she thought was always clear ahead of her, the only path, had slipped through her claws in a single moment.

When she awoke in the infirmary, an unexpected visitor stood vigil nearby.
