The shrine was silent for a century.

That was a millennium too short.

Mokugami had inhabited the Okaze shrine since its construction by the ancient Gale civilization, allowing her to draw power and manifest in exchange for protection. Before Omnia there was great calamity, and with little to hinder the nearing swarms of violent spirits, the dragons turned to the great Kami for survival. She had little reason to turn them away, their dedication to her the source of her grandiose power - yet, after years of fighting back the incursions, she realized the toll it was taking on the dragons around her. Infested with darkness and prickled with fear, they had lost homes, friends, and in many cases, their sanity, joining ranks with the destructive forces encroaching ever closer. Mokugami could have wiped the blight clean, but there would be no living soul to tell the tale.

Hastily returning to her shrine, Mokugami was unwilling to shed her godly powers, instead opting to sacrifice her voice in exchange for eternal tranquility, a solemn ritual that would render her mute forever. While some saw it as a selfless act, others thought it to be greedy - when it was over, however, none could dispute the surge of peace that rendered the land bountiful and vibrant again. And, none were to set eyes on the Kami, those who still worshipped her giving her the title of Mokugami. The God of Silence.

And then, Elkan arrived. Chaos stirred in the Flickering Woods, and for the first time in years, darkness once again threatened to tear the Floating Heights apart. This was more than enough to rouse Mokugami from her restless slumber. To say she was frustrated would be an understatement; in fact, her rage was so earthshaking that the very shrine she slept inside cracked at the seams. To think that the pact of silence she had taken in such sadness was being reduced to trifling antiquity at the claws of a wretched beast was more than she could handle. But, in her silent state, she no longer had the adoration of the Gale people to bolster her strength, many having forgotten her deeds and moved on in ignorance. She would need to regain her former power.

The Wyrmwound was the only answer. Casting herself from her shrine, she exposed herself to the diseases of the Ground God of Plague, emerging as vibrant as her former self, with a booming voice that would undoubtedly spurn on the loyalty of her followers.

At least, her newfound head could speak. The old one was simply left to watch in spiteful silence, a new battle for power stirring from inside the great Kami herself.
