Archive is one of the most respected dragons in both Amity & Enmity. Known for her incredible fighting prowess and discipline, she uses her considerable intelligence to command the military force of the city, as well as serve as the Head of Academy, where new warriors are constantly training under her supervision.

"It's like you're staring into the silent abyss of darkness, without a whisper but with shattered memories everywhere, which once told forgotten but important stories about the past and the future." -Luunai

founded along with the Academy. Archive serves as the primary commander of both.

Ulnari are a secretive sect of warriors personally trained by elite fighters. Also known as Blades, Ulnari are selected for a combination of innate skill, dedication to mastering themselves and their art, and an ability to operate under extreme duress. Put through rigorous tests, Ulnari are only allowed to officially accept assignments and carry out missions once they have graduated Academy, gone through additional specialized training, and successfully completed five personally tailored trials. Once ascended, each dragon must swear an oath to never use their power and skill without reason - especially not to kill. The main role of full Ulnari is to protect the other dragons within the clan, as well as serve as captains when an organized defense or attack is necessary; however, they are also occasionally dispatched on more sensitive missions, the exact nature of which cannot be disclosed.

“It’s ridiculous,” she fretted, twisting her talons together anxiously. “It’s preposterous. It’s… it’s INCONCEIVABLE. How could one dragon destroy fifty-seven books in one hour? I don’t get it.”

The small, pearlescent wildclaw paced the polished floors of the library, her nails clicking on the veined marble. Clouds of shimmering dust trailed behind her, sparkles of little stars winking in and out of existence as she waved her arms. “I mean, ARCHIVE. You can’t SERIOUSLY believe ONE DRAGON did that. And in a library RIGHT by us, too! How could a single aether have a stomach that big? Are there aether Emperors now? Can aethers have three heads? I swear to Stormcatcher-”

She stopped, whirled, turned to face the silent imperial behind the beautifully sculpted library desk. “Archive, are you listening?”

Yes, she signed, her glowing purple eyes seeming to twinkle. I am listening. You are angry.

“Of COURSE I’m angry! What, a giant floating island crashes into Sornieth and suddenly all of the libraries are being sabotaged? How many books were lost in the heist during the Brightshine Jubilee - what was it, a thousand? Two thousand? Oh dear.” She dragged her palms down her face, giving Archive a dramatic pout. “It’s simply terrible. All those books.”

Archive simply sat, a small smile on her face, patiently waiting for the wildclaw to finish. The little dragon kept pacing, occasionally glancing at Archive out of the corner of her eye. Finally, she stopped, plopping down on the ground with a sigh. Archive’s eyes continued to twinkle.

“Are you laughing at me?”

No. Archive winked, her myriad of wicked teeth glinting in the magical lamplight. The library was illuminated by orbs, mainly conjured by Suri (it had taken some convincing to get him to make all seven hundred and thirty-two of them.) Fire wasn’t permitted anywhere near the entrance, nevermind actually inside, so magical lightning was the next best option. It certainly highlighted Archive’s teeth well.

The wildclaw (her real name was Carnation, but everyone just called her Rainbow,) gave Archive her most skeptical eyebrow raise. “I think you’re definitely laughing at me.”

I would not dare, signed Archive, smiling. How could I face the wrath of your mighty cupcake and unicorn army?

“My cupcakes are lethal. They’re so good, they’ll melt your face off. Just you watch.”

I am vegetarian, so I am spared from the face melting. Good for me.

“I can take out the glasswing dust. Then you’ll HAVE to eat them.”

I would rather not, but thank you. The imperial let out a soft huff of laughter through her nose, the warm air ruffling the pages of the open book in front of her. Besides, you should save your secret weapon for the legion of aethers coming to eat all of your books. Always keep a stocked arsenal.

Rainbow gasped, pressing a hand to her heart in sincere shock. “AETHERS? Coming HERE? SINCE WHEN???”

Archive only smirked. In the future. Maybe.

“You have GOT to tell me. I need to prepare! What if one of them silently sneaks in at night? Wasn’t there that… what's his name… Ky… something? I DON’T KNOW. But he’s banned from like, TWENTY libraries for eating their most sacred and treasured magickal tales! And we have A LOT OF THOSE. And he’s STILL OUT THERE.”

You are very energetic, signed Archive, shaking her head in amusement. Sometimes, you make me feel old.

“I’m only energetic because I’m working on a revenge plan for all of the devoured texts across Sornieth. They need avengement. Is that a word? I’m making it a word. Put it in the dictionary. AVENGEMENT.”

It is called vengeance, sweetcakes.

“Don’t start with the sweetcakes.”

You are sweet, and you like cake. What better name is there?

“My name is RAINBOW. Not sweetcakes.”

Sure. Sweetcakes is a good nickname for a dragon named Rainbow, don’t you think?

“I’m going to throw something at you.”

My reflexes are legendary. Just you watch, Archive grinned, parroting Rainbow’s face-melting-cupcakes challenge. I will almost certainly catch it, and then what will you do? Send your ponies after me?

Rainbow finally giggled, relenting with a roll of her eyes. “Your reflexes are pretty impressive. But… aethers. Are there really some visiting? Because if there are -”

Archive interrupted her with a hand gesture, shaking her head. You do not need to worry. I will not let some silly moth dragon eat your books. I will scare them off if they try. She bared her teeth and flared her eyes in an admittedly terrifying display, her scales lifting from her face to create hundreds of dagger-sharp edges. Rainbow raised her eyebrows, shivering a little as Archive returned to normal, shaking out her mane.

“You know,” Rainbow said, inspecting the cover of the book on the library desk, “you’re pretty scary when you do that. Wanna teach me how?”

The imperial let out a snort, plucking up the book and depositing it in Rainbow's lap before ruffling her hair fondly. Have the book. It is called Abyssal, a biography written about a clan leader who fights the Shade.

“Thanks. But can you teach me? Pretty please?”

Archive shook her head, the corners of her eyes crinkling. It is not a skill to be learned. It was born with me, given by the power of the dark I try so hard to fight. You are much too vibrant for such things, little one. Stick with your lethal cupcakes and we will all be happy.

Rainbow sighed, twisting her mouth to the side as she turned the book around in her talons. “I guess that makes sense. Well, it’s effective, anyway. Promise to scare off any aethers that try to eat my books?”

Promise.

“Alright,” mumbled Rainbow, relieved. “Alright. I’m gonna go read this. It sounds interesting. You okay here?”

I will be fine. I have some business with the Academy to attend to.

“I don’t know how you run that, honestly. It’s sooo complicated. I could never.” She pushed herself from the floor, dusting off her scales as her clouds rose with her, twinkling cheerfully. “But okay. Good luck with that. I’ll see ya later. Besties.” She bumped fists with the imperial before scampering out of the library, the talon-carved doors swinging closed behind her.

Archive stared after Rainbow for a moment, a slight smile on her face, before looking down at her desk. The papers and scrolls and tomes were, for the most part, ruthlessly organized, and she located what she needed almost immediately.

Shifting aside a stack of worn parchment sheets, she hefted the leather-bound tome to the center of the desk, dusting away a few scraps of material left from her previous session of bookbinding. Careful to keep her fearsome claws in their sheaths - she had a rare gift of retractable talons - she traced the words of the title, beautifully woven in golden embroidery:

Records & Musings
written by Archive

Opening the book, the well-used spine crinkling, she flipped through well over a hundred pages full of words before landing on one that was partially empty. The elegant cursive seemed stark against the page, deep black against pale cream, and she stared at it for a moment, mesmerized by the contrast.

She shut her eyes when the words started to swim, lifting off of the page and twisting into something hideous. Shaking her head firmly, she snapped the book shut, eyes still closed, and pushed it aside. She heard the whispering voices of her nightmares in the back of her mind and she shook her head again, harder this time, as if she could shake them right out of her skull.

Looks like I won't be attending to that business tonight, thought Archive, a bittersweet smile twisting her features. She hadn't heard anything from the Shade for a while. She should have known it would be back.

She could hope it wouldn't, but she would always know the truth.

Her head snapped up when she heard the library doors open, tense and ready to lash out, but relaxed when she realized it was only Suri. The little spiral padded quietly across the room, keeping his head down, brilliant blue eyes hidden. She felt his sadness from across the room and she frowned, an aching feeling opening in her chest.

I wish there was some way that I could help him. He used to be so vibrant, but after Fable… that cursed murderer. I hope she gets what she deserves.

There was no way for Archive to call out to him, so she simply watched as he slunk towards the Medicines section, his shoulders hunched and wings drooping. He didn't even look up at her as he disappeared between the rows of shelves.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx• • •

She shook her head, the aching feeling turning into gnawing. She wasn't sure why he had been spending so much time in Medicines, but she had a suspicion, and she didn't like it. If the spiral was searching for ways to numb his pain, with either plants, potions, or magic, he might eventually take it too far. She thought about going in after him, but couldn't bear the thought of seeing him page through books of painkilling herbs and flowers as he sat in a sad puddle on the ground. She decided to check on him a bit later to make sure he wasn't completely buzzed on fermented Janus trap root. Or… whatever he had been taking.

Pushing up from her desk with one last glance at her Records & Musings, she started for the doors, her long tail trailing behind her. As she pushed through, stepping into a wide hallway lined with luminous glowmoss and weeping lilies the color of seaglass (courtesy of Ellie,) an idea suddenly came to her.

What if she planned a prank… on Suri? The young spiral had been a total prankster before the… incident. Maybe it would bring back memories of his old life, when he had been happy.

She wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do, so she would ask Echart, Suri's best friend and closest confidant. Or, well, she used to be his closest confidant. Suri didn't really talk to anyone else these days, for the most part keeping to himself. Regardless, Echart knew Suri best, so she would know what to do.

As she started to walk, planning to go to the exit closest to the Semicircle towers, she stopped as three dragons hurried down the hall towards her, blocking her way. She started forward again to meet them, concern blooming when she saw the frantic looks on their faces. Elation and Galadriel, along with Echart - that was funny, she had just been going to speak to her. But what was going on?

As the four dragons met in the middle of the hallway, Ecarht skidded to a halt, her massive chest heaving. Words tumbled out of her mouth, barely legible with her accent thickening the syllables.

"Ther's- clouds- light'nin- typhoon, bad, bad typhoon. 'Nados too. Bad. We're in trouble, mate, big trouble." Blinking in shock, trying to digest the flood of panic, Archive reached for Echart's shoulder with one arm, steadying her as she signed quickly with the other. She looked into the panicked imperial's eyes, trying to calm her down.

What typhoon? There are tornados? I thought it was clear just this morning?

After a moment of silence, Echart only heaving in tortured breaths, Elation spoke, her voice cold and hard.

"It was. It isn't natural."

Turning to the skydancer, she felt dread start to seep into her bones.

What does that mean for us?

Elation's eyes flattened, her teeth flashing as she squared her shoulders.

"It means it's coming for us head-on. Typhoons don't just materialize out of thin air, even on the coast of the Shifting Expanse. And Ecarht would have caught it before now. It means that there's only one explanation."

Archive inhaled sharply, the realization hitting her all at once. Her talons dug into her palms as she stared at Elation, barely contained fury boiling like lava.

Prepare the city, Archive signed. It seems my old friend has come for a visit.
