Nineveh hails from the frozen south, but she’s been accustomed to the water most of her life: she’s a type of dragon called a prismfish, suited to aquatic life and the fragmentation of light. Every one of her scales shimmers a different color, never quite the same one twice, and it’s impossible to tell what color she’s supposed to be in truth, though she recalls that both her parents were in the neighborhood of white. For Nineveh’s part, however, her gems are the only part of her that’s truly white. Her gembond was brought on by a bad encounter with an onyx cobra, and has only reinforced her preference for water versus land. Before that, she could fly and walk on land if she really wanted to, though she loved the water well; after the gembond set in, Nineveh found that the stones slowed her, clustering at her joints and making her movements heavy with the weight of them. In the water, though, she was as light as ever, and when she moved farther north, inland to the Sea of a Thousand Currents, the chill was less. There are worse things, after all, than a life in the environment she loves. Nineveh remains the optimistic sort, generally more likely to see a brighter side of things than most, despite that half the world is effectively barred to her. She swims with slow easy grace, and she considers all her actions carefully, loath to dive into danger without considering again. By the time she met her mate, the gembond was almost completely part of her genetic makeup, but Solanum has a way with such things. Bit by bit, he’s been trying to find a way to pull the gems from her without harming her. There’s moderate success -- Nineveh’s wings are less encumbered than they were -- but after a few years Solanum has had to admit that it will likely never go away entirely. So Nineveh lives with it, and slows her flighty mate down to rational thinking speed when he needs it, and life goes on as well as it can. |
