Tiresias’ hatching was heralded by the word oops, and his mother wrapping a claw around his father’s antler with the imperative that the explanation had better be good. Where all his siblings are vibrantly purple and blue and white, Tiresias himself is greyscale, and his wings resemble the blotching of liquid stains more than his mother’s feather-ghost patterns or his father’s pale iridescence. Even Maenon, sleek moon-child that he is, has deep pure indigo sweeping across his wings; Tiresias is grey and black and white alone. As it happens, Solanum’s terrible lab practices got the best of him while Tiresias’ clutch was incubating, and the warm shallow eddy that kept the eggs safe and out of the way picked up significantly more of a spilled potion than safe or predicted, owing to Solanum’s general inability to predict current motion. All of the eggs were affected one way or another, some more drastically than others. For Tiresias’ part, the mishap did more to him than change his colors. He took the brunt of it, and as such all the color that should have been his went to his siblings; he can’t even see colors, and has more than once been poisoned by something he simply couldn’t see the warning markings on. As some sort of exchange, however, Tiresias can see magic. He sees it as currents, motion in the air and water around him, each a different texture and shade of grey. Spells look more like tangled knots, or sometimes careful braids, depending on their nature. This provides a whole new depth to his spellcasting, and as a result, Tiresias is growing into a skilled if unusual mage. A skilled mage with a slowly increasing resistance to various toxins. He sees more than he says, watches rather than does, often not even really present in the conversations around him by virtue of pure and simple distraction. It's a lot of input. But as a result Tiresias thinks around problems different ways than his fellows do, and is often the best to come to for an unorthodox solution. When approached at all, anyway, as his distance tends to unnerve some, and his social graces are a little bit lacking. He simply never bothered to develop them; the magic was much more interesting. |
