Biography
A creation-age figure whose validity is contested among dragonkind.
"From this bedlam, the magical energies themselves began to concentrate and change. Similar particles receded into four great beings, each overwhelmingly dense with a different element. As if eager to proudly display their emergence to some unseen divinity, these beings took on the shapes of great wyrms..."
There exists a legend of a great dragon who preceded even the very first gods of Sornieth. A short but bittersweet tale of lonely yearning and hopeful generosity, Sorna recognized that she held within her the power of worldly life, but not the capacity to craft and mold it, herself. With a deep and resolute sigh, she curled into a ball and relinquished hold of all that she was-- creating the planet on which our flights live, today.
Through this great gift, the roiling magics within her were granted life of their own... and the means to create it, themselves.
The tale of Sorna is not nearly as widespread or accepted as that of the regular pantheon. Most records of her are skeptic scholars' research into her mythology, with scant writings from truly devout believers here and there. Those who do recognize her are few and far between enough that they are widely regarded as a fringe-cult. Greater in number are the dragons who enjoy her story in passing at the most, and whom merely see it as good bedtime story fodder for their restless hatchlings.
Extra:
- Referred to as the goddess of change, gift, and surrender to destiny, Sorna's followers give thanks to her spirit at the beginning of each season-- making her the only holiday dragon to be observed year-round.
- Every spring is kicked off with grand festivities by her devoted believers. Sorna is always taken out of the hibernation den during the month of the spring equinox. But also during other times in the year. Just kinda whenever I feel like it.
- Sorna's eyes are generally depicted as a pale and colorless white, void of any elemental touch.
- Some believe that Sorna was not truly lost in the planet's creation, but that her soul may periodically be reborn upon the earth and wander it for a while; delighting in the life that has since filled it.
- The Niamh Clan recognizes her as a religious figure and has created a handful of songs and dances in her honor.
- Nchi, with her striking similarities, is suspected of being one of these periodic incarnations. As a result she is treated especially kindly and perhaps a little too spoiled for her own good. (Good thing she's a nice girl!)
- Interestingly, the unicorn beastraces appear to observe a similar religious figure. Theirs, however, is believed to be more kirin in form and nature than dragon-- although that's probably to be expected.
