Biography

“In the gardens of these cities are strange orchids, and perfumed lakes whose beds are of coral and amber... And the floor of the palace is of glass, under which flow the cunningly lighted waters of the Narg, gay with gaudy fish not known beyond the bounds of lovely Cathuria.”
The White Ship

CATHURIA

Cathuria is a beautiful land rumored to be somewhere in the south of Dreamland. Called "the Land of Hope," it is filled with sweet music, bejeweled architecture, and flourishing scenery. No dragon has ever seen it, but many have died trying. It is possible that the paradise was made up to lure Dreamers to their doom. Stubborn dragons search for it, anyway, by following the bright blue bird that seems to beckon them.

Cathuria is located in the uncharted waters beyond the Basalt Pillars. To get even that far, one must sail past several islands. The first is the Land of Zar, which traps forgotten dreams. Next is Thalarion, the City of a Thousand Wonders, with streets buried under the skeletons of dead visitors. After this comes Xura, the Land of Pleasures Unattained, which is covered in lush vegetation but smells of rot. Finally, the dreamer must pass the Land of Sona-Nyl, which is perhaps the hardest test. Sona-Nyl is a beautiful land that is completely without time, pain, or death. Weaker-minded (or perhaps wiser) dragons will chose safety and peace over the uncertainty of Cathuria.

Illarnek the Fantasist, named after the desert capital that his parents visited often during their travels in the Dreamlands. Inspired by their stories of the fantastical places and peoples of the sleeping world, Illarnek grew up believing it was his destiny to make his own journey there one day, and seek out all the thrilling sights and experiences that the realm had to offer. So the romantic ridgeback learned the ways of the dreamer, finally perfecting his skills when he came of age. In delight he spent night after night exploring wondrous locations, meeting beings of many races and learning secrets that were both exhilarating and terrifying.

Months turned into years and Illarnek began to spend most of his time dreaming. He even risked falling into decadence by relying on elixirs to help him stay in slumber so he that he could enjoy the hedonistic thrills and revelations of Dreamland without interruption. The ridgeback would lose himself playing the lute in the perfumed gardens of Yin, or frequent the marvellous land of Hesperia where a river of time brings in dreams through a starlit stream. He sought out the ancient ruins of doomed Sarnath and discovered the statue of Bokrug, much to the amazement of the people of Mnar. Often Illarnek would sail on the merchant vessels of Dalath-Leen to visit the island of Oriab so that he could purchase fragrant resins and examine the delicate pottery of the artists of Baharna, or he would go on to Celephaïs - the magnificent city dreamt into being by its ruler, Kuranes.

It was from wise Kuranes that Illarnek learned of the Fantastic Realms, a plane beyond the south of Dreamland and accessible only by an ethereal boat known as the White Ship, piloted by a bearded and robed figure. It is said that seekers may only board the White Ship from the land of waking at a place called North Point where a grey lighthouse marks the location. There the keeper, the only known dragon to return from a journey on the White Ship, waits in hope of seeing the vessel again and making another trip, all the way to the fabled Land of Hope, Cathuria.

Filled with curiosity and excitement, Illarnek vowed to find the White Ship and begin a fresh adventure with new sights and stories that even his parents had never seen or heard of. The eager ridgeback awoke in Sornieth and set out immediately for North Point in the region of Dragonhome, though upon his eventual arrival he found the lighthouse keeper unwilling to reveal his experiences to a stranger. When Illarnek told of his own knowledge of other worlds, the old pearlcatcher softened, but during his storytelling he warned the inquisitive dreamer that the White Ship passed through many places, each with their own pleasures and dangers, but most mystical and alluring of all was beautiful Cathuria, the Land of Hope. Even the celestial blue bird that guided the White Ship did not know of its exact location, and those who dared to pursue Cathuria risked sailing off the edge of the world and ending up shipwrecked, or worse.

But this news did not deter the fanciful Illarnek, and he still waits in the lighthouse hoping to spy the sails of the White Ship every full moon, longing to walk over the water on a bridge of moonbeams and greet the robed figure who would take him to Cathuria. The inhabitants of North Point have named him 'Illarnek the Fantasist' and believe he is wasting his time on daydreams, as no-one save for the keeper has ever seen the White Ship, and no-one regards any of the ridgeback's or the keeper's tales as anything other than strange fiction..

Fun fact: Illarnek's personal lore is inspired by, and written in the overly-descriptive style of H.P. Lovecraft's 'The Dream Cycle' stories.
