━ NOTES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
When Chiron lead us to Clan Lyewing's camp, I wasn't paying much attention. I didn't ask where Chiron was leading us or who would be there. My head hurt and I could feel a rasping cough building in my lungs. When we finally arrived, I barley registered seeing or saying much before falling asleep in a shaded nest. I woke up to Chiron shaking me awake. "You need to drink," he said. "Here." He pressed a wet sponge to my mouth, and I had enough presence of mind to tell him that I was not an invalid and that I was perfectly capable of drinking by myself. He said he was glad that I was feeling better. The audacity. It was his fault that we were stuck in this wasteland in the first place. |
Then it occurred to me what was happening. He had offered me water. Clean, fresh water. I looked to my left and saw a real spring settled between a patch of rock. We weren't alone, Either. Almacia was resting in the shade of a large tree, the only tree I'd seen in the Waste. And there were others.
There were a couple of Longnecks and a few Corven with patchy feathers. I could see a Mirror playing a chase game with Turi around the tree.
I was confused. Where was the Waste? Where was the harsh wind and the constant threat of being mobbed by snake creatures? I wasn't left in suspense for long. The Clan Leader introduced herself as Nandina Lyewing, and she said we were welcome guests, even if we followed other gods. Nandina is one of those brisk types, who states their business and not much else. She said she would supply us with food and water, and left to take care of other business.
I went to fetch myself another drink of water but Chiron stopped me. "We need to ask for permission first," he said.
Chiron explained that this an important rest stop for Plague Flighters who make a pilgrimages to the Wyrmwound. Fresh water is rare in this part of the Waste, and while Plague Flighters respect the sanctity of the traveler's paths, springs like were valuable. So valuable that it needed guardians.
I looked around, and I noticed that Clan Lyewing was was keeping a very close eye on me and an even closer eye on their precious water.
Well, they did rescue us from certain dehydration and exposure, so I suppose I should be grateful. But I wont cry any tears when we leave in the morning.
