I've been trying to puzzle out what Phrygia has going on in his basement. His strangely colorless staff take turns disappearing somewhere, but they rarely leave me unsupervised. Sometimes I catch whiffs of strange smells, that range from sweet to bitter. I asked Lushu about it. He smiled and told me that it was Lycos's cooking. "Everything she makes is a surprise," he said, smiling with all his teeth. "And it's always so delicious." I asked Lycos, when it was her turn to babysit me. She stared at me for a while. Just when I was unnerved enough to turn away, she told me that it was the ocean air, coming in through the vents. "The sea turns up unusual things," she said. |
Well, I've got my own ideas.
At first, I thought Phrygia was forging gold or some other illicit substance. It would explain both his wealth and his secrecy. Then, I though he was smuggling. He gets all these packages, but Lycos only unpacks some of them. The rest are moved when I'm not looking.
Perhaps one or both of these are still true, but I have a new theory. I think he's keeping a prisoner.
When Lycos makes one of her horrible meals, she always makes more than we need, but never lets Lushu have seconds. I'm the only one in this lair who seems to use paper and ink, yet the supply always seems to be low, even though packages of it arrive every week.
My ability to explore the lair is limited, but I swear I've heard an unfamiliar voice in the halls when my minders assume I'm asleep.
I don't know what this means, but at this point, I'm willing to take risks to find out.
