"For each of us, there comes a time when we must awaken and become what we were born to become."

T wo broken people who wear masks daily, who are battling themselves; one is battling to find her light, and the other is battling to accept his darkness. Fate will bring the broken halves together as one. Only if they don’t destroy the world first.

This is the story of the Barghest, Yokai.

The full moon rose high and Elsevier sneered, summoning his familiar. Madara paced forth from the shadows, her long tails sweeping the ground behind her. “You called me, master?” She growled, stalking forward as she danced around the dark lines of an alchemist’s circle engraved into the stone floor.

“The moon rises full once more and our preparations are nearly complete”. Indeed, the mage had already gathered the majority of the ingredients and he plucked several long strands from his familiar’s hair once more, adding them to the piles of dark ash, feathers, and bone that rested at the center of his workshop. “I believe everything is in order”.

With that, the mage began to chant, dark streaks of Shade flickering across his golden scales and down to his outstretched hands. The full moon gleamed overhead and the Shade leapt forth, slithering over to the piles of ash and bone before it began to coil itself around the ingredients. . . and weave them together.

“I am impressed”. A voice echoed from behind and Elsevier briefly acknowledged his mentor leaning against the arching stone doorway. Madara let out a low growl at the intrusion, but made no attempt to move towards the Wildclaw who watched them intently. “Don’t disappoint us,” Frankenstein added casually, although his voice echoed darkly around the small room.

Elsevier’s creations began to take form, gleaming bones articulating as the black ash wrapped around them and solidified into muscle and skin and long, flowing fur. Their eyes gleamed and flickered with the bright golden glow of the mage’s magic as the creatures took shape. There were three of them; cursed beasts whose colors reflected the chaos of the magic that had created them. “What purpose will you give them?” Madara growled, hackles bristling as she stepped forth to inspect the children that her master had created. Perhaps it was because they had drawn upon her own magic and essence as well that the beast felt a tingle of connection to the trio of hatchlings.

“You are quite fond of them” Elsevier replied. “Perhaps I will let you shape them this time”. The beast nodded, stepping into the circle. “Come, then” she called before darting off into the shadows. The three newly created beings cast wary glances at their father before dashing off after Madara. Elsevier had no doubt that Madara would send them off into the world once she had trained them. “I wonder” he mused to himself with a smile “what they will become”. He turned back towards his own mentor who had watched the experiment silently. "Not at all bad. But still, you have not created what you seek..."

Elsevier cast his eyes down. "We will keep trying until we achieve it - a creation of the right balance between Shade and magic. . . the ones we have made thus far are rather unstable, but I have no doubts they will find their place within this world."
