BARGHEST LORE AND LINEAGE PROJECTGENERATION II CAVIAR|ROE'S LINE "Henceforth I ask not good fortune I, myself am good fortune."
Rumor has it that dreamers may find themselves beside a strange shrine in the woods, yellow eyes watching from the steps. It is said that in this moment, their fate shall be decided. . . one of great fortune, or one their demise.
This is the tale of the Barghest, Madara. |
Moonlight filtered down through the open mouth of an enormous well, illuminating bricks of dark stone with its pale light. Roe grew restless, stirring from her hibernal slumber in the well’s depths as her eyes slid open, two burning coals in the darkness. Her gargantuan form was coiled around three glowing orbs that pulsed in time with her heartbeat. A heartbeat. It amused the beast that she still had one, a last reminder of a time long since passed and forgotten.
Roe glanced up, the moon framed in the opening of the well above her, a thin crescent in the sky surrounded by a circle of stone. She stretched, the myriad of golden coins that comprised her nest shifting with her movements. She could feel as the season shifted with her as well, the last remnants of winter fading away.
With the coming of Spring, the sheets of ice that had frozen over Roe’s well melted, but the fox-beast did not emerge right away. Instead, her attention was fixated on her children, the luminous eggs stirring as they began to hatch. Roe watched in fascination as hairline cracks appeared along the smooth orbs, widening as chips of shell fell away and the first of her children emerged into the world.
The first thing that the hatchlings saw were their mother’s eyes. They were the eyes of something cursed and demonic with orange-red scleras and a slitted black pupil, yet they held a look of genuine care, an emotion that Roe had not experienced since long, long ago. Her firstborn let out a cry as Roe leaned forward to nuzzle her children, cleaning them gently with her tongue.
The children of Spring had arrived and Roe would teach them to hunt and survive. . . and to use the dark magic borne into their bloodline. They were cursed creatures, but perhaps their tainted blood held a gift as well.
Despite being the second borne, Madara emerged last from the well, nudged to the surface by her mother when she refused to climb. She wanted to stay, to sleep among the nest of golden coins and look upwards at the moon. She holds a gentleness and curiosity that is rare among her kind, preferring to take the form of a small red fox as she darts through the woods, a series of seven tails billowing behind her like paint brushes and a single golden coin flashing from around her neck.
Her legacy is that of fortune and some tell rumors of a strange shrine that appears in the forest, a yellow-eyed fox watching from its steps.
