Alistair is alone from the moment of his birth. His hardened scales chilling in the wind from the south, he tumbles out of his egg and explores the nesting grounds with curious eyes and paws. As any young child is wont to do, he pads around with little to no concern for his own health, and this soon catches up to him in the form of various bruises and scratches along his body that Alistair learns to ignore, for no one will shush his cries or tend to his wounds. Instead, he heals them himself, with crude bandages and poultices, wincing as he wraps himself up.

It's not until he's older that he realizes his parents were very much in the wrong for neglecting him so. They don't notice as he leaves the lair, and he doesn't look back. For some time, he roams recklessly, fighting on behalf of anyone that will pay him until he can afford proper armor. With the used kit that he buys comes a strange piece of equipment, which he eventually learns can be used for repairing metalwork.

Passing through the northern-most reaches of the wasteland, he manages to get himself lost. As he grows increasingly panicked at the idea of being trapped in a toxic series of caves, he never loses track of the knowledge that no one will come to save him.

Until, surprisingly, someone does. Creeping out of the shadows without announcing herself, Arum issues Alistair careful instructions for not only getting out of the tunnels, but avoiding the dangers within them as well. Finally, when they are safely outside, he has to ask her: why? She replies that she simply wanted some company, and Alistair offers on a whim to stay by her side for as long as she likes. Smiling in her eerie way, Arum agrees. She was on her way to visit a certain clan, if he'd like to accompany her.
