Larimar's parents have long been responsible for the ceremony rites that allow dragons to be exalted. Familiar with the ritual from a young age, Larimar nonetheless has more questions about it than his parents can answer. Growing more and more curious as he gets older, Larimar reads all the texts he can find about the exalting process. How dragons go on to serve the gods, what they might do on the other side, the ways their sending-off rites vary from place to place... In time, he realizes that he has become an expert in the subject.

Still full of questions, he roams the world, speaking to religious officials, scholars, warriors, and alchemists. With each encounter, another piece of the puzzle falls into place, while simultaneously raising more questions in his mind.

In particular, his encounters with ghost hunters leave him conflicted. Of course dragons require rites to reach the afterlife, but if no rites are performed, they become ghosts instead. Still, it can hardly be considered the ghost's fault that they received no guidance into the next life. So why must they be exterminated?

Hoping to find the answers he seeks, his travels intersect with Almasi's. And unlike most ghost hunters, who view his questions as frivolous philosophy, she is willing to work alongside him to at least attempt sending ghosts on peaceably before putting them out of their misery. Sometimes it even works.

Still, none of their combined expansive knowledge prepares them for the quandary posed by Eirawen: a ghost pulled back into the world of the living, carrying on peacefully as if he had never been dead.
