Poor Sprout was a late flyer. His parents, Oliver and Beckford, would have worried. The young Fae watched as his hatch siblings left the melon patch for their own new melon patch. Would he fit in with other dragons? He wondered if there was a melon patch out there for him, but home melon patch was nice too.

Days went by and Sprout helped his parents in the melon patch. He did feel at home and no wonderlust called him. He tended to the melons in the melon patch and made sure no crows got to them as small of a dragon he was. Larger birds scared him.

A shadow passed over him as he looked up and watched the most beautiful melon fly by. She was bigger than he by far, but the pink of her wings was nothing like he had seen before. Young love. He flew off after her. He had to know her name!

Sprouts poor parents would find the rest of his chores not finished and their son gone. The wind carrying the young Fae to a new melon patch. But he was not the only melon! Melondy and Estrello were there! Sprout made sure to ask Melondy for paper to write a letter back to his father.

Hey Dad,

I'm doing fine! Sorry I flew off the other day. I saw the most beautiful watermelon! Oh! Melondy and Estrello says hi! Well, Melondy did. Estrello is busy. I hardly see him.

See you and Mom soon,
Sprout

The letter was signed in scribbles and what appear to be watermelon juice stain paw prints. Sprout was eating delicious watermelons while writing the letter. Before he placed the folded letter in the envelope he remembered he needed to add something. He quickly unfolded the letter.

P.S. Her name is Flo.

He folded the letter and put it in the envelope. He gave it to a messenger dragon to deliver. He looked around the melon patch. This melon patch felt like home.

----

Kelorn found Sprout a funny little Fae. Sprout tried his hardest in the Coliseum, but he was not much of a fighter. "Experience comes with time. I think your talents lie elsewhere. Should experiment with that too."

Sprout took it to heart. He wanted to defend the melons, but those birds were still scary. He thought it would be best to take a break for a few days from fighting. "Thanks Kelorn. You may be right. I'll have to think this over." Not that he was giving up, but he just needed more time to prepare.

He was quiet on the flight back home. Kelorn had asked if everything was alright. "I am fine. Just some thoughts. We protect the melon patch, but I'm no good if I run away. I don't want to fail my family."

When they landed at home Kelorn eyed the small Fae. "It's a scary world. I admit, I've had my challenges. This is just one of your's. I have faith you'll over come it. You're not alone. Just know you have allies to reach out to."

"Yeah. Melondy knows how to fight and Estrello, well, I don't see him often, but I have seen him practice in the evenings sometimes. I'm sure he's a better fighter." Sprout sighed.

Kelorn poked Sprout with a claw. "There are many forms of strength. Get some rest."

"Okay." Sprout retired for the night lost in his thoughts.

----

It was a peaceful morning. Dew dripped off the leaves shining many little rainbows of light. There was a light morning fog in the air as the morning sunlight cut through. Small birds like robins and finches chirped.

Sprout sat on a stone bench under one of the oak trees. What would he tell Kelorn? It had been a few days since the fight. He had no idea. His bruises were mostly healed, but he still felt sore. This world is dangerous for a little Fae and melons.

He watched the smaller birds fly by and flinched from the sudden movement. A noise caught his attention. It was a faint melody with the plucks of what sounded like a string instrument. His curiosity got the better of him.

The breeze rushed passed him and almost lifted him off the bench with his outstretched wing membranes. The fog shifted with the gentle breeze. He hopped off the stone bench and followed the sound.

He had not met the entire clan yet, but the clan here was full of different flights and the main wind dragons. Some of the nature dragons started the gardens on the clan lands, and one of them was and extensive hedge maze. The music he heard was coming from the hedge maze.

He hesitated and looked around. The dragons off in the distance were focused on their morning chores. He wondered who was in the maze. He stepped forward into the maze listening carefully to the melody.

At times there was a pause, a quiet break, which made Sprout feel lost in the maze. He ended up at a few dead ends, but enjoyed seeing the statues, fountains, trees, flower beds, and memorials. One statue almost sent him running through the hedge maze. It was a large crow carved out of a smoky quartz crystal.

He muffled his panic screams as he heard a new melody pick up. He followed again down the wandering maze path. The path he was on led him to a mossy clearing with an old willow tree. A small fish pond was near the tree's roots. There was a fallen moss covered log between the tree and pond and sitting on top of the log was a pastel multi-colored Coatl dragon. They were playing a harp.

Tourmaline paused and looked over. Sprout quickly hid behind the hedge. The Coatl laughed. "You're safe here. I see I'm not the only one out for a morning walk. That's great! You can join me." Tourmaline waited for the little Fae to come out of hiding.

"Wait. I've seen you briefly the other day with Kelorn. How'd the old man treat you? Hopefully well. I hear from young dragons that training can be intense." Tourmaline patted the mossy log. "Come." He beckoned.

Sprout cautiously walked over and pulled himself up onto the log. "It went well I think...who am I kidding...It was difficult. I froze when those giant birds came out."

The Coatl turned his focus on the pond and listened to the Fae. "Hmm. It's okay to be afraid. We all have things we're afraid of. What's your name little one?" He plucked a string on the harp. As the string wavered the soft note carried on the wind.

"I'm Sprout." Sprout looked down at the koi fish swimming. "I want to defend the melons, but I'm just afraid."

"That's a good cause. Trying is the first step and you did that. It's good to face your fears." The Coatl nodded. "You may not see yourself strong in the moment, but you did come back from facing a fear. These things take time."

"Kelorn told me I may have other talents."

"That's good!" Tourmaline tilted his head to look at the Fae. "What are you curious about learning? I'm sure this clan has many that have the knowledge to teach. Physical fighting is only one method. Like everything in nature, life moves with the ebbs and flows adapting to the challenges that are brought to it. These koi fish were not born big. They were raised with care. Sparrow has talents on the sea and raising fish as a hobby. "

"I don't think animal raising is my thing." Sprout's head fins pressed flat against his head.

"Now I don't think that's true." Tourmaline spoke softly. Sprout looked up at him.

"Why do you say that? Clearly birds hate me."

"You've had her attention this entire time." The Coatl pointed up into the willow tree. "You may not be a ranger, but not all animals will hate you."

The frills on the Fae flared open as he saw golden eyes look at him from the willow branch. "No need to worry. That's my cat. I can tell from her purrs she is comfortable around you." Tourmaline laughed. "I may suggest a smaller companion for the future. It may help you come out of your shell."

The Coatl placed his harp on the log and motioned Sprout to hold it. "Go on. I want to see if this harp interests you."

Sprout looked at the harp and back at the Coatl. "Okay." He was careful not to drop the harp. His claw plucked at the strings. It was a random melody that made no musical sense and scared off the cat. Sprout's tail twitched. He liked plucking the strings of the harp.

"A good first performance. I think music is your calling." Tourmaline smiled. "First time I've seen you happy."

Sprout eyed the details carved in the willow harp. He plucked at the strings again. "I would like to learn how to play."
