Oatmeal, as her name suggests, is a connoisseur of all things pastry. Spending most of her time in the bakery, she often smells of freshly baked bread and treats, with hints of cinnamon on the weekends when she makes her specialty french toast. Her wings carry bundles of cinnamon, dried mint, decorative flowers, and other assorted dessert toppings.
In her spare time, Oatmeal loves gliding along open grassy fields in mid-spring when the dandelions have bloomed, dragging her wings just low enough to stir up clouds of dandelion seeds.

Baking Brainstorming
Written by CupcakeNova

“Hmm, what do you think of this one?” Oatmeal asked, holding up the shaker towards the pocket of her apron, and the tiny veilspun tucked inside it. “A little bit of nutmeg? I could make a nice bread pudding.”

Lunate seemed to consider the suggestion for a moment, before shaking their head. “No,” they said, their voice soft as a whisper, only audible to Oatmeal because they were so close together. Even still the noise of Oatmeal’s siblings banging around the kitchen nearly drowned their voice out. “I think it might be a bit too rich. These are supposed to be lighter desserts to go with tea, remember?”

Oatmeal sighed. “You’re right,” she agreed, “I might save that idea for next week, though. Still, I need something really special to serve for mom’s tea party, something that’ll blow those new merchants out of the water! I can’t afford to make any mistakes, mom is counting on me!”

Lunate hummed thoughtfully, before suddenly pulling themself out of Oatmeal’s pocket. The Pearlcatcher went still as Lunate carefully climbed their way up Oatmeal’s apron, onto her shoulder, and then made their way down her arm to land on the countertop in front of Oatmeal’s spice collection. They paced the counter, inspecting each shaker, sniffing at a few, before abruptly pushing past them and making a beeline for a tin shoved to the back of the workspace, hidden behind a pot and a mixing bowl. Lunate managed to wedge themself behind the tin, before shoving it forward with a grunt.

Oatmeal took the offered tin, opening it up and giving it a sniff. “Tea bags?” she asked. “My mom is the one making the tea, Lunate, I’m in charge of the dessert.”

“What about baking with it?”

“Baking with tea?” Oatmeal repeated, a bit incredulous. “But that’s - !”

She suddenly stopped, a look of wonder spreading across her face. “But that’s brilliant! Hang on, Lunate, I think I know exactly what you’re suggesting!”

She dashed across the kitchen, digging through the cupboards on the far side until she emerged triumphantly with a recipe book. The cover was so worn and faded that the title almost couldn’t be read, the pages dog-eared and falling out. It had clearly served the kitchen many times based on the state of it.

Oatmeal brought it over to the counter and plopped it down next to Lunate where they could see. After a few seconds of frantic flipping, checking the index at the back, and then more flipping, Oatmeal stopped on her desired page and pointed a claw at the title, exclaiming, “There! What about that?”

Lunate peered down at the recipe, the ink faded with age in some places, muttering under their breath as they read through the ingredients list. “Lavender Tea Sugar Cookies,” they read the title aloud, mulling over the idea. “I think that sounds perfect, Oatmeal!”

Oatmeal cheered and did a little victory dance, before reaching out her hand to let Lunate climb back up onto her shoulder. “Great! Let’s get started! I can’t wait to see how these turn out!”
