Lunate is a peculiar dragon. They prefer not to be seen by anyone who doesn't work at the restaurant, hiding from sight by tucking themselves into apron pockets or under hats. One of their wings is broken, almost torn off and completely missing, rendering the veilspun incapable of flight, and by extension, incapable of performing the intricate and mesmerizing dances the breed is most known for.
While most of the restaurant staff would consider it a rarity to even catch a glimpse of the veilspun, Lunate is almost always found in company of the youngest daughter of the restaurant owners.

Hatched them because my wrist was bothering me, and wanted to get my mind off of it. Turns out that there's some abnormal spacing with some stuff, so this dragon is going to join me on my journey to heal.

Stealthy Service
Written by CupcakeNova

The garden was sunny and peaceful, a calm breeze sending the leaves of the surrounding trees rustling, a few birds chirping in their branches. Here and there the sounds of nature were joined by the delicate clink of a teacup being placed down on its saucer, and under it all was the low murmur of polite conversation. Overall it was a very pleasant afternoon.

And yet, Lunate was nervous.

They knew they were just being paranoid. Hidden underneath Oatmeal’s chef’s hat, none of the nearby servers even knew they were there. But Lunate couldn’t help but worry that the gentle breeze could at any moment turn into a strong gust, knocking Oatmeal’s hat off and revealing them to the entire assembled crowd. They could only imagine the scene it would cause; Crackers’ tea party would be ruined. Lunate sincerely prayed that the Windsinger wasn’t in the area for a visit.

Any other day, Lunate wouldn’t have been worried about being seen. In fact, these days they spent most of their time hanging out on Oatmeal’s shoulder or in her apron pocket in the kitchen, helping her with her baking, and the regular kitchen staff didn’t mind at all. They didn’t care that they were a veilspun, only that they helped Oatmeal make the most delicious treats this side of The Pillar. To them, Lunate was just another member of the staff.

But recently the restaurant had grown so popular that Soup alone wasn’t able to keep up with supplying the ingredients needed, and Crackers had been forced to outsource to keep up with demand. She’d decided to host a tea party to court potential suppliers into giving the restaurant a good deal, and no expense had been spared. The party was so large and elaborate that Crackers had hired some extra temporary servers, which meant that Lunate was stuck hiding out of sight until the party was over. They hadn’t minded; riding around on Oatmeal’s head wasn’t that unusual, and her puffy chef’s hat was thin enough that Lunate could both see through to watch what was happening and still feel the fresh breeze through their mane. But Lunate couldn’t help but worry anyways. There was so much riding on this party for the whole restaurant.

They felt Oatmeal wince beneath them, and they realized that they had been so nervous that they had tangled up their claws in her mane and were tugging on it. Lunate didn’t think anyone had noticed, but they quickly untangled themself, patting Oatmeal’s ear in apology.

Suddenly, a crystal chime rang through the garden. Crackers was standing at the head table, ringing a little silver bell and nodding towards the back of the garden where Oatmeal and the other servers waited.

“That’s our signal,” Oatmeal directed her servers. “Go now, remember your tables!” Oatmeal herself picked up her own silver tray and carried it swiftly but carefully over to her mother’s table, where the most wealthy merchants were seated.

“Lavender Tea Sugar Cookies,” she announced, placing a beautiful china plate with a pair of scrumptious looking cookies down in front of each guest, including Crackers. “Please enjoy.”

As she bent down to place the last plate in front of Crackers, Lunate felt her hat momentarily shift. Their heart pounding in their chest, they quickly grabbed the rim of the hat, pulling it back into place. They thought they saw Crackers’ eyes briefly flick up towards them, but she simply gave them a knowing smile before asking the merchant on her right about their preferred method of transporting goods, deftly drawing attention away from Oatmeal and her squirming hat.

Still, Lunate’s body didn’t untense until they were safely back in the kitchen, the temporary staff dismissed for the day, leaving them and Oatmeal alone for the first time since this morning.

“How are you doing?” Oatmeal asked them quietly, reaching up to take off her hat for a moment.

“I’ll be happy when this is over,” Lunate admitted.

“Only a bit longer,” Oatmeal reassured them. “Mom has a speech prepared, and I think dad might say something? And then whoever is interested in a partnership with the restaurant is supposed to write to us later, so they’ll all be heading home soon.”

Lunate didn’t reply, the stress of the day leaving them tired and worn.

“You know, I’m pretty sure Basil is in charge of dinner tonight, wanna head over to his place and see if we can sneak in a few samples? Pretty sure I’m not needed anymore.”

The idea made Lunate perk up almost immediately. “That sounds like an excellent idea,” they agreed. “Let’s go.”

And so they did.
