Crackers is able to predict the future to a certain extent, using her pearl as a scrying surface. Due to this, she polishes it to an obsessive degree using the silken scarf that adorns her neck. She is rarely seen without the scarf, as it was a gift from her beloved mate Soup.
Her familiar, an Arcane Sprite named Matzo, assists her in her fortune telling. Matzo prefers not to interact with the other Arcane Sprites, since he's a bit embarrassed about the contents of his magic tome; an extensive list of various recipes that Crackers saw in her pearl during scrying sessions.

The soft purple velvet of the cushion was worn and faded, the tassels hanging from the corners frayed and loose. One of them had fallen off completely. But it was soft and clean, and the center had been worn into the perfect groove to rest her pearl upon, and so Crackers wouldn’t hear of replacing it. This pillow was the only one she would use when she gazed into her pearl to do some scrying, and that was that.

And so it was with the air of a well-rehearsed ritual that Crackers pulled the old cushion down off of its place on the shelf in her office, placing it in the middle of her desk, right next to a long roll of parchment and a fresh quill. She gently dropped her pearl onto it next, rubbing some imaginary dust off of the top with the hem of the new scarf Soup had given her, and then settled into her chair.

“Let’s see,” Crackers muttered to herself, placing her claws delicately along the sides of her pearl. She squinted into the milky center, trying to peer past the swirling clouds she could see inside to spot the visions hidden beyond. After a few moments of watching, she began jotting down a few notes with her quill, occasionally glancing back to her pearl as if confirming details.

“Skewers of shrimp…lobster tail…swordfish steak…” she murmured softly to herself, marking them off under a heading labeled ‘Popular Items This Week’.

For a time, the only sound in the office was the scritch of her quill nib darting across her scroll, as she continued to consult her pearl for visions of the future for the restaurant. But then all of a sudden she seemed to spot something in the swirling depths that made her pause, look closer, and then shake her head ruefully.

“Oh Kevin, the Clown Shrimp Alfredo again?” she sighed. “You order it every week! Ugh, I better warn Oyster.”

The mention of her son seemed to make something shift in Crackers’ pearl, and she stilled as the swirling mists suddenly took on new forms. She leaned closer, her quill dropping thoughtlessly on top of her notes, forgotten. Whatever her pearl was about to show her, it was a bit more serious than planning this week’s menu.

Within her pearl she watched as two sinuous shapes seemed to twist around each other, diving and swirling until they became knotted together, forming a snarling tangle. While the vision would have seemed ominous to anyone else who had seen it, Crackers just sighed again, this time in resignation.

“Another fight?” she asked her pearl tiredly. “When?”

The resulting swirl of smoke would have been meaningless to any other, but Crackers had been using her pearl to tell the future for many years, and she understood its meaning immediately.

“Already?” she felt her brow ridges lift a little in mild disbelief. “Well, then, I guess I better head up there now. The menu can wait.”

With that, she scooped up her pearl from its cushion, and left her office to head upstairs towards where her family lived above the restaurant.

Sure enough, as she climbed the stairs up to their home, she could hear raised voices. As soon as she mounted the final step and pushed open the door that led to their front hallway, the shouts resolved themselves into words.

“...you always steal the good mincer, even though you barely ever use it! Don’t you know I need that one for my marinades?!”

“I don’t steal it, I only take it when you’re not using it! And you’re the one who left it in the sink to ‘soak’ instead of washing it properly!”

Crackers took a moment to close her eyes, take a few deep breaths, and count to ten. Oyster and Bisque fighting over something petty was like a rooster crowing at dawn - annoying, natural, and inevitable. The only surprising part of this scene was that for once Eis wasn’t nearby, watching the fight like he wished he had popcorn to munch on.

Crackers waited for the moment when both Oyster and Bisque took a breath to continue yelling at each other, and then took the chance to intervene.

“Alright, that’s enough.” She didn’t bother shouting, but she used what her children called her ‘Mom-with-a-capital-M voice’ which was even more effective. Both Bisque and Oyster stopped and turned toward her at once with guilty, wide-eyed looks.

“Bisque, Oyster,” she looked sternly at each of them. “I don’t know who started it, and I don’t care. Both of you need to calm down. I’m trying to work on this week’s menu, and you’re overwhelming my pearl.”

“Sorry mom,” both of her children said sullenly, their heads hanging down in shame.

“Now, I’m going to head back downstairs. I don’t want to hear another peep, or see another vision of you two fighting, understand?”

They both nodded, and then with a final glare at his sister, Oyster turned and vanished into his room, slamming the door behind himself. Bisque puffed up in indignation for a second, and then she too stormed off, headed for the restaurant below. Crackers watched them both go sadly, shaking her head once again.

“Kids,” she sighed.

For a second, she stood alone in the hall. And then she said, “You can come out, now, my dear.”

Ever so slowly, Soup’s head peeked out from around the corner. “Is it over yet?” he asked meekly.

Crackers laughed softly, leaning back as her husband came up behind her to drape himself over her shoulder. “One of these days I won’t be around to diffuse their fights, and you’ll have to step up,” she teased him gently.

Soup shuddered. “I can handle fighting beastclans and monsters, but get in between my kids in the middle of one of their arguments? Only you’re that brave, my love.”

Crackers laughed again as Soup gave her a peck on the cheek, and then together the pair headed back down the stairs, hand in hand, to finish up Crackers’ work.
