Despite the fact that Toph was born blind, it never prevented her from seeing.
She can see via the vibrations that pass through the ground underneat her feet.
This ground-breaking self-taught skill is not typical for Earth-type dragons.

Ever since she was a young hatchling, the dragons in her entourage had adopted an overprotective role. As a result, Toph would enter a rebellious phase, causing trouble in an attempt to prove, not just to herself but also to everyone else, that her visual impairment did in fact not prevent her from being self-sufficient. Stealing food from the community's hoard would eventually earn her the sobriquet of Blind Bandit. In an ironic twist of fate, however, Toph would eventually outgrow this phase and mature into a responsible-minded community member. To demonstrate her self-reliance and to make up for her past, she took the important decision to reciprocate the protection that the others had shown her from a young age. Her sense of justice and protection would eventually earn her the role of ambassador between the Pox Consulate and the nearby city of Monterosa in Dragonhome. The former Blind Bandit had thus become the all-seeing watchful eye.
