Biography
Lorelei
Mate of Eldan, Primarch of the Spring Court Lorelei ventures to the river at the edge of the clan's territory on the first day of spring. When she arrives, she spots a figure on the other side. "Who are you?" she calls out. "A visitor," the figure replies. "I would like to see what your kind has to offer." She turns around, intent on returning. "If you would like to meet my clan, you will have to use the main road. They would not take it kindly to an intruder crossing the border elsewhere." "I have seen enough," the figure says. Lorelei does not watch them leave. Lorelei returns to the river another day and sees the figure again. "What do you want?" she calls out. "To meet someone new," the figure replies, "and learn all I can about this world. Seems I will not have a chance to do the former today." "A shame, for sure," she says. The figure considers them. "What do you want?" "Some peace and quiet," she replies. "Seems I will not have a chance to do that today either." "It does not." The figure smiles at themself as Lorelei leaves. Lorelei returns to the river. "Hello again," she says to the figure. "Are you hoping to see something new?" "I wouldn't mind it, no," they say, "but I'm merely passing though today." "Hm." She watched the figure walk by the bank. "I don't think you ever gave me your name." "No, I did not." "Do you have one?" she asks. "Yes," the figure replies, face turned away, "but it is not as simple as to give it to you." "Hm." "Do you have a name?" Lorelei smiles. "Tell me yours first." "A fair trade." The figure smiles and walks away. "You never stay." Lorelei looks up across the river. "I come here often. I cannot stay while you're here." The figure cocks their head. "Why do you go?" "My clan is... strong-willed," she replies. "They're not fond of those who tread lightly on our borders, our territory." "And you share that sentiment?" they ask. She turns her head away. "They'd be furious if they learned I was... consorting with a stranger. One that won't enter our territory properly." She gets up. "I can't stay." "A shame," the figure says as Lorelei leaves. "Where are you from?" Lorelei asks the figure. "Elsewhere." She snorts. "Unsurprising." The figure cocks their head. "How so?" "You always speak of seeing my people, seeing more of 'this world'," she says. "Of course you're from somewhere else." "What else would you want to know?" She considers the question. "What is it like where you're from?" The figure pauses for several moments. "It is... greener. Your forests are lush with growth, but it will fade with time. The woods of my home are always budding with decadent growth, brimming with beauty and opportunity. There is none of summer's heat, or autumn's decay, or winter's frost; simply the boundless growth of spring." "It sounds beautiful," she says. The figure smiles. "Perhaps I can show it to you someday." Lorelei ventures to the river at the edge of the clan's territory on the last day of spring. When she arrives, she spots the figure on the other side. "I cannot come here again for some time," they say. "Why not?" she asks, anxiety lacing her words. "I must return to my home," the figure says. "The path I take will close come summer, and I cannot take another as safely as this one." "When will I see you again?" "Next spring, perhaps. The path may not lead here again come next year." They turn to the side. "It may be time to bid you farewell." Lorelei leaps to her feet. "Can I come with you?" The figure turns toward her. "Your home is here. Should you travel with me, I cannot guarantee your return." "I don't care," she says. "The others of my clan are stifling. They're strict and narrow minded. I can only find respite on the edge of our territory. If I never returned, I would be happier." The figure smiles. "Very well. Tell me your name, and I will take you to my home." She does, and she never returns. |
