About "...then with my last cry, they were gone.” Crispin was told he had been cursed. Did he believe this? No. Who would? Plenty of dragons hatched on Halloween. Just because it was that one day that everyone deemed “spooky” doesn’t mean he was the same. He enjoyed watching the autumn leaves tumble off of trees with such child-like innocence. The world around him was dangerous yet he’d never know. The cold was coming to consume them. He sought adventure; a life where such a cruel world did not exist. As he grew stronger, Crispin started to venture further and further away from home. From across the Frigid Floes, he saw a land that seemed to be caught in an eternal summer. After this discovery, Crispin would spend most of his days observing this place across the sea. He’d see dragons flying over, delivering packages to other clans that lived within his home. It was fascinating and he longed to visit. However something felt wrong within him. He felt clanbound. As he knew he could never cross the sea to a warmer place, Crispin began to spend more time in his village. He observed the ways his clan worked and started picking up on job offers. One day, a blue-green Imperial landed with a group of dragons behind him. It was a gift from the Wind Domain, a supply of soldiers for battle. The Imperial came with a bamboo basket filled with goods and trade items from his homeland. Dragons gathered round, interested in what they had brought to share. The Imperial spotted Crispin’s curious eyes and tossed him an off-white rose. In order to keep it from freezing, Crispin nurtured the rose in a homemade greenhouse. Soon, one rose became many as it spread rapidly. His studies had not predicted this as roses take a decent amount of time to grow. In order to keep the small greenhouse from becoming full, Crispin would remove roses and weave them together with golden thread. Winter raged on and it kept getting more difficult to keep his roses alive. They were his only connection to the summer lands across the sea. Determined to keep the flowers alive, Crispin dug up a single rose, repotted it, and fled. He left all his belongings behind. After all, no one would come looking for him. Upon racing the Frigid Floes, Crispin attempted to take flight. Nothing happened. Was this the curse others spoke of? He could not lift off of the ice mass on which he stood upon. Try after try and he was still stuck. He cried for help, for anyone. However no one came to assist him. A few hours had passed and it seemed as if he’d lost hope when a warm breeze passed over. It surrounded him with its warmth and reassurance. In this daze, Crispin found that he could lift off. Talons wrapped around his rose he gathered up all his strength… … and just like the leaves he watched fall from trees, he left. |
