Rhys has always had a soft spot for his fellow living things, having been a dragon talented in gently catching exhaled breaths in order to send the humidity on its journey through the water cycle. Until he was inducted into the insidious Project Pearl. He didn't know what he was signing up for, when he did - Kairau made it sound like they just needed a few extra claws to find the cure to anything and everything, and Rhys almost fell for it. But when he noticed every participant was a Pearlcatcher, and saw how some dragons seemed to be stuck in a dreamlike trance, he knew something was amiss, though he wasn't quite able to place his claw on it. In the meantime, he did a lot to help the organizers of the Project, often standing guard against the disruptors he'd heard so much about. It was the least he could do in the name of progress.
Then, Fir and the others found him. They saw his kindness and his desire to do right, and so, they showed Rhys the truth: all these dragons were being asked - no, forced - to make the ultimate sacrifice. Everything they've ever been, all their memories, given up for one dragon's insane and twisted vision. Gambling their lives and happiness on nothing but an idea. Once he learned what Foci had planned, he knew he had to work alongside the Resistance. Taking advantage of the image he inadvertently painted of himself as a willing, if unwitting, participant, Rhys now acts as an agent for the Resistance, taking care of the less fortunate dragons trapped in the Project who aren't wise to the dastardly machinations and convincing those that lost hope that their pearls are worth fighting for.
