B I O G R A P H Y

Cold. Emptiness. Void. The hatchling was lost, lost somewhere free of warmth or colour. A cool grey haze floated around them, and their feet stood in a shallow, chilled river. Death. The hatchling was beyond the veil. But no! They were not ready to go! Their soul struggled against the slow, relentless tug of the river, struggled and called and resisted.

And help came. Korvax heard the cry of this lost soul and wrapped them in his power. The next few moments were a confusion of light and swirling colours. And heat. Oh, the glorious heat of life! Hypnos was reborn, and they would not waste this second chance.

Hypnos was silent, consumed by the Veil. He felt the void on his skin, the tearing and ripping of death, and he fell. He could feel the magic, the residue of death clinging to his body and mind. He tried to move, but his small, weak body was crushed and mangled. The pain was everywhere, and it made him want to cry out, to scream at the heavens, to tell the world his agony. But he couldn’t, as his face had rotten to almost nothing at all, a mute horror of shredded skin and gleaming bone, of a mind lost and unable to grasp anything.
He felt the pain in his chest, the torn flesh and the cracked ribs, and he let it consume him rather than fight it.

So he fell.

Deep, deep, deep, into an horrible, all-consuming sillence. He coughed up silver blood, spitting out the remains of his broken, bleeding lungs. His body twisted, broke and shattered, the remains of his flesh, sinew and bones, falling to the floor.

When he hit the ground, he found himself in the middle of a field of bones, amidst a sea of cracked, shattered and splintered rib bones, femurs, tibias, fibulas. Everything was submerged in a shallow layer of stinking water, encrusted with brine and bits of silver. He waded through it, emerging on the other side, coughing up water and bits of broken bone. Even in his near liquified fleshy form, with waters of the river Lethe saturating his body, he knew. This was the Land of the Dead. The place where Mourning Flowers were grown and the Black Parade marches on. This is the place of the Exalted, where only the dead go.

But he wasn't dead.

He couldn't be.
He was a... he wasn't sure of what he was. Hypnos felt like he was dreaming, this must be a dream. How could a corpse be moving, if it wasn’t a dream? How could he be here, if this wasn’t a dream?
He walked on, silently into the waters. As he went on, less and less bones appeared, and the cave became darker and darker. It took a long time, but he reached a point where there was no longer any light to be seen. The cave was black as pitch. In fact, there was no cave anymore.
There was only the Veil, the Veil between death and life, all the existence that is not allowed to exist, the Shade, the shadow of existence itself.
The waters of the Lethe ran thick and black as tar around him, and he began to feel sleepy. His limbs felt heavy, and his eyes closed. He began to float, to drift, down into the darkness until he heard his voice. I
It was the voice of God.
Or at least something Hypnos thought was God.

“Why do you linger in the darkness? When there is so much life to have?” Korvax said, with a smile on his distant face.
Hypnos’s lower jaw had rotted off his face long ago so he simply nodded.
“I haven't seen a soul as decayed as you for a long time. You must have been down here…for decades.”
He nodded.
“Well, then. Let’s get you out of here.” He smiled, and Hypnos followed, into the light, and into Life
