"This inclination to hoard is deeply ingrained in me because in the past, in times of scarcity, you took what you could get."

Gemstar came from a tiny, extremely poor clan in the shadow realm. Though the dragons he was born to had little to nothing, they still seemed to feel that the sages deserved a good portion of whatever they earned. The pursuit of knowledge was everything so that their clan could be uplifted, and the 'wise ones' needed to be supported in their efforts.

To say this had a bit of an impact on the dragon early on is a bit of an understatement. Gemstar found that he couldn't respect the pursuit of something intangible when it took tangible things like food, warmth, and pretty trinkets away from himself personally. As such, he developed quite a distaste for studying in general and poverty overall.

Gemstar's parents were horrified at his attitude. It was hard to care when he was so hungry. When they demanded he give up some small shiny beads he found on the ground one day, he snapped. Packing up any little thing he had managed to secret away, he left his home lair and never looked back.

Travel - filled with many stops for investigation and acquisition of shiny items - eventually led him to Chaotic Daydreams. Intrigued by the fluid, freedom-loving clan full of interesting dragons, Gemstar was happy to stay a while. There were so many beautiful, sparkly things that he was allowed to look at and touch... and anything he found for himself that wasn't claimed by another, he was allowed to keep. His room soon filled to the brim with treasures of all kinds.

Someday soon he may have to expand deeper into the lair for more room, but for now Gemstar is happy to be smooshed into his cave with all of his loot.
