It had been a hard winter. The crops the year before had been meager at best and even with every resident journeying to nearby clans looking for work, the payout was meager and food stores were running low. The town had been mostly empty for months, with only Crane, Shavuot, Hideau and Miesh, who had just hatched her first clutch, remaining behind to look after things while the remaining population worked elsewhere in order to scrounge up food. It was a bleak and lonely time for all of the townsfolk both there and abroad and really threw into contrast how much of a community and family they had formed. Everyone was separated and it was eerily quiet around the settlement save for the occasional squalling of upset hatchlings while their mother tried her best to console them.

Shavuot had made her way to the nearby trading outpost to collect the food and other resources sent to the Wild Oats settlement from the residents working abroad. With the aid of Kova's Shalebuck, Shavuot was hauling the goods back to town on a sledge when she nearly ran into an elderly dragon who looked to be lost.

I...I'm very sorry, sir. Are you alright? she asked, trying to regain her composure after the unexpected surprise.

The traveler, an old Tundra with a graying muzzle and stiff joints. Oh yes, dear. Don't you fret, he hummed.

Shavuot nodded and continued her trek towards Wild Oats. After all, she had to get the supplies back to town and the Tundra didn't seem hurt or anything. But of course, she had to glance back. The old grey-nose was just standing there...absentmindedly looking down the road as if he were waiting for something. Sighing and shrugging off her harness, Shavu turned back and trotted the short distance back to the scruffy dragon.

Sir...do you need help? You seem lost.

Oh, not lost, my dear. I just...need to recall where I'm going is all, he replied with a kind smile.

Wasn't the inability to know where you were headed the definition of lost? Shavu raised a brow and continued. Well, perhaps I could point you in the right direction. Do you...uhm...recall anything about this place you're trying to find? It would be difficult to tell him where to go if he didn't even know his destination.

North...I think. I was in a warm place. It smelled of light and ocean. There were other scents too. Family. But they disappeared. He sounded sad then, his voice full of some unknown sorrow. Perhaps guilt? But just as quickly, his pep returned. I remembered good scents from up North. Where it smells like soil and old earth. There were family smells there too. But...then I got turned around and I ended up here. But the aromas are familiar. I do think I have been to the Windsinger's province before.

His story seemed disjointed, but Shavuot felt as though she grasped the jist of the Tundra's journey. She smiled then, taking pity on the elder. She was well aware that they were low on food and it was foolish to take in another mouth to feed, especially a mouth that came with an old Tundra that was no such candidate for physical labor. But what would it say of her honor? Her integrity? The Tundra's wizened chocolate eyes reflected her own Earth Flight gaze. She could not...would not abandon a lost dragon.

How about you come with me. I live in a farming settlement not far from here. We'll get a good meal in you and a night's rest and see if you can recall your destination afterwards, Shavu suggested warmly.

Oh, you are most kind, he acknowledge gratefully. He didn't seem wary of her charity like some travelers were. This either suggested that he was used to a community mentality or he was simply too confused to be suspicious.

I'm Shavuot, the Mirror put forth, hoping that the Tundra at least remembered his name.

Ah, pleasure to make your acquaintance, Shavuot. I am called Two Ages. Or just Ages if you prefer, he replied.

Oh thank the divines...at least he knows that much, Shavu thought to herself. Though her relief faded to scorn as she kicked herself for thinking such insulting things about a stranger. It was not becoming of an emissary. Well that's certainly an interesting designation, Mr. Ages. But the pleasure is all mine, Shavu replied.

The last leg of the trip was a bit slow, what with the Tundra's walking pace was equivalent to a shamble. But he spoke of his trip thus far, and Shavuot found herself rapt by his tale. He even dipped into the story of his many names and how he'd acquired his current moniker.

I began life with a different name altogether, though I cannot recall what it was. Isn't that funny? Anyhow, I was known as Enoch after that. The clan that gave me that name is long gone, I suppose. Since I'd already grown old with that clan and spent even more time with my most recent clan, the dragons took to calling me Two Ages since it seemed that I'd lived that long. The old Tundra chuckled as they approached the gates. Crane came out to greet them, the feathers around his face flaring a bit at the prospect of a stranger. Shavu quickly noted the Skydancer's body language and stepped in front of the Tundra to intercept.

Crane, I came across this Tundra on my way home. He is in need of food and rest for the night. Would you please tell Miesh to prepare a bed at the Inn? Her tone did not invite contest, and Crane knew enough to do as she bid. Giving the pair a nod, he took his leave.

The Tundra became the center of attention at the Inn that night. Even Miesh's hatchlings were enamored by the grandfatherly attention they were receiving. The more he spoke, the more clues about his past arose in bits and pieces. He had begun life in Dragonhome, sired children, then moved on to a clan in the Windswept Plateau. It was unclear as to why he left the second clan, but his memory seemed sharper when he spoke of his most recent residence in the region of the Sundial Terrace. He turned out to be much more articulate and intelligent than first though by Shavu, his wisdom and experience pouring forth as he told the small group of his life. Two Ages did stay the night, but he did not depart the next morning, or the morning after that. While the rest of the clan was still away, Ages became detrimental in helping around town. His most valuable asset was the ability to keep the hatchlings occupied while their mother went about her chores.

In the back of her mind, Shavuot kept returning to that tale Two Ages had told her about his names. She knew she had heard of a dragon named Enoch before and the thought stuck with the Mirror relentlessly. She scoured through her records, searching for any clues that would spark her memory. This went on for weeks, Shavu searched her tomes and scrolls in her spare time, until she finally came up with an answer. Before her departure from Elsewhere, her father had given her a copy of his clan records that he kept on the members of his clan. It was an abridged tome, not having the extended lineage of the original back in Dragonhome, but any resident in the Elsewhere clan was listed along with their parents. Two of her former clan mates, Hahnu and Vokun, were children of a dragon called Enoch. What if it was the very same Tundra that had wandered into her life? She immediately began to inscribe a message to her father for confirmation. Some weeks later, Vokun and Hahnu showed up at the settlement.

Two Ages did not visually recognize his children, for they had grown old themselves and the elderly Tundra had to dig deep to recall their scents. He remembered Hahnu first, revisiting his memories of her through her scent that he'd stored away for all those years. It took him longer to remember Vokun, who had since come into contact with a scroll that transformed him into a Wildclaw. But after a day or so, Ages remembered him as well. They revealed that Enoch had left Elsewhere in order to help found a clan in the very territory Wild Oats was settled in. An old Guardian and his mate had established a clan, but after a time were both killed in a Dominance skirmish. The small clan they had led disbanded, and Enoch wrote to the Elsewhere Clan, informing them that he was traveling to live with an allied clan in the Sunbeam Ruins. He remained with that clan the longest, earning his current name. But that group also apparently fell to some unknown foe and, in his old age, Two Ages wandered, lost. He didn't think to write the Elsewhere clan with the news, for it had been so long since he'd even contacted them. So he ambled, searched for something familiar until stumbling upon scents in Wild Oats territory which stirred his memories. The odds that this dragon was a remnant of the old structures upon which the new citizens use as a foundation floored Shavuot. Even Crane and Hideau were entranced by this new knowledge. After all this time, Enoch...Two Ages had come back.

His children were overjoyed to see him and even invited him back to Elsewhere, which caused a twinge of pain in the heartstrings of the Wild Oats residents. They had come to rely on the old Tundra for his advice and his ability to unveil the silver lining in any circumstance. Miesh's hatchlings were far more verbal about their disapproval of their "Pawpaw" leaving. But Ages surprised him all with his response.

Oh, no, my dear ones. It has been a blessing to see both of you and to know that you prosper. But I feel as though I am called to remain here. There is a life for me in Wild Oats...I remember Elsewhere fondly, but this is my home now.

Hahnu took the news harder than her brother, but both the Tundra's children accepted their father's wishes. The departed with bittersweet farewells, hoping that the old Tundra would be happy in the small town. Not even a week after the pair left, a shipment of food and woolen garments arrived from Elsewhere. These supplies, a parting gift from Vokun and Hahnu, helped see the settlement through the winter.

When the chill finally began to give way, the rest of the Wild Oats dragons returned to find the dragons that had remained in far better spirits than they had been in when the majority of the population left. They were all regaled on Shavu's story of finding Two Ages and the visitors from Elsewhere. Oats, as per usual, was not keen on the new citizen, but grew surprisingly close to the old Tundra in a short amount of time, coming to rely on his sage advice. This earned Ages the title of Town Elder. Unofficially, he cares for any and all hatchlings while their parents work. The children will often string up scraps of colorful cloth and trinkets around the outside of Two Ages's hut and the townsfolk have taken to calling his home "the nursery."
