Winter Sakura (or Winter, for short) witnessed the terrors of war and strife from a young age. She was orphaned before she could even meet her parents for the first time, their blood spilled by warriors from an opposing flight. The tiny fae fled the shattered remains of her parents' nest, wings still wet from the insides of her egg and her future uncertain. But death did not come for her that day: the Arcanist granted his tiny devotee insight into mysteries beyond her years, fascinated by the fact that her mind grasped them so intuitively. So she became a student of the arcane ways, determined to create her own clan and lead them in defense of refugees and victims of war, no matter where they come from.

Over time she gravitated toward the Oculus of the Eleven, where dragons from all flights watch the ley lines for signs of catastrophe. This is where she met her mate, the pearlcatcher Renaissance. Their pact to save as many victims of war as possible lead them to create a stable clan base, so that injured or otherwise unfit dragons could be ministered to in safety, as well as small, mobile war parties who are drawn from those willing and able to fight in defense when the lives of innocents are threatened. Winter and her mate Renaissance also raise their own children to uphold these ideals - Butter and Milk being the first generation to receive this upbringing.

The clan's numbers swelled to their first peak around this time, many rescued dragons choosing to stay with those who had welcomed them during their lowest moments. They numbered close to fifty, all told, from various backgrounds and breeds. This made their missions and scouting parties diverse in both talents and strategies, allowing them to more effectively switch tactics against larger groups of their foes.

Of course, when feathers are ruffled, there is always some level of blowback. Winter and her clanmates had bedded down one night when flames broke out across the camp, and enemy warriors flooded into their carefully crafted nests, pressing the attack until Renaissance called for a tactical retreat. They'd lost at least one warrior, and he didn't want to lose any more.

"Fly, fly!" Renaissance cried on seeing Winter's saddened agreement.

In a matter of moments, the clan had been uprooted. With nowhere else to go, they fled across the border, forsaking the Arcanist's domain for the danger and darkness of the Plaguebringer's, where she and her mate would eventually change their breed, becoming banescales - banes to those who dared harm their clan and the innocents under their protection.

Winter looked out over the blasted, disease-ridden lands that had previously been visible only from the highest vantage points, unsure what to do or where to go next. But she'd think of something. With the help of her mate and best friends, she'd think of something.
