An astronomer and an astrologer are an unusual pair, but Pickering and Leavitt make it work by both being uncommonly academic. Surrounded by seas of treatises and articles, their hatchlings learn to thrive on a healthy diet of organized chaos with a sprinkling of absolute awe for the universe.

With their parents teaching them the individual stars in each constellation and the finest points of a well-crafted rebuttal statement, these children are well-prepared for a life devoted to learning about something. Some choose to follow their mother’s scientific bent, and others are led down the more mystic path of their father, but all of them can be found on a cloudless night recounting the stories of the stars.

A family full of academics is often one also full of arguments, though Galene does her best to avoid the weeks-long debates her siblings can get locked in. This isn’t to say she doesn’t have her own particular passions, just that she has no interest in studying as a means to an end, like winning an argument or proving a point. She appreciates learning for the accumulation of knowledge in and of itself. She can ramble for hours about tarot cards, and what symbolism different cards draw on, how a particular deck is connected to the artistic traditions of traditional Ashfall crafts, the ways different layouts can be interpreted. If one asks, she’d be pleased to do a reading for them - as long they promise not to argue with the answer. She’s awfully tired of her siblings doing exactly that to her.
