Best friend: Mud puddles.

Secret hideout: Under the pine log. Rem thinks she's hiding a treasure down there, but all she could find were slugs.

Had for lunch: A fish-and-ketchup sandwich, four eggs, Digi's beetle crackers, a jingle bell, and three pillbugs Rem found under a rock.

Favorite toy: The treasure Rem couldn't find...

Nightwatch isn't quick to join hatchling games. She prefers to dig around under tree roots and overturn rocks, or sprawl to one side chewing on a toy and staring. Lots of staring, at other hatchlings, passing adults, and any animal moving nearby. When she does play, it often turns to roughhousing that ends with her sitting on a smaller hatchling, and Annas has to gently intervene. She is only gentle with Buster, and sits grooming his fur when sulking after being scolded.

She does, however, enjoy being out in the rain, sliding and pouncing through puddles and splashing mud onto anyone nearby. And the other hatchlings have learned they can dare Nightwatch to eat anything, almost absolutely anything, which is another behavior Annas has to keep an eye on. Often the prize she expects is a share of their snacks.
