Biography
pearl was born in a clutch of 5, which is way too many hatchlings for first time parents to deal with. luckily, pearl was the only big problem child. she was always too curious for her own good--getting into other clan member's things, prying into lives, wandering out into areas Cato and others warned her from (she doesn't listen to Cato much. he's such a worrywart stick in the mud that she usually ignores him). she seems to think these are things she should know--everything--but despite that she manages not to be a know it all. petulant at times and seems to have the self absorbed childlike kindness.
pearl loves her home and loves the shifting expanse. she attributes anything she doesn't know to magic, which only makes sense since she has magic (which makes Glitch more than a little angry for all reasons).
as a hatchling she wandered into carrion canyon, mostly because Cato kept making horrible faces at it and then told her to never go near it. she went in a little too far, way too far. she was a stone's throw away from a harpy encampment, and with her inability to fly she was walled in by the high, sloping sides of the canyon. but just before she wandered too far, or fear made her give her position away, a light flashed in a nearby break in the wall with a crack just the size of a young snapper hatchling. she ducked in to protect herself, then found herself in a huge cavern with beautiful glowing crystals adorning the wall--almost the same shade as her gembond. she felt utterly at home in this cavern, completely protected and her stomach warmed with something she could only describe as belongingness.
she was too young to hear about the rift yet, despite her constant pestering, but she saw it firsthand in that cave. in the area with the densest crystals, a swirly hole opened up and seemed to suck all the air out of the room. when she got closer, pearl found she could breathe better. an arm reached out of this hole and beckoned her even closer still. it dropped a small rose colored wing cuff onto the dirt in front of her, and a voice filled her head.
and the moment pearl picked up the wing cuff and clipped it on, she felt a warmth swell in her chest. she felt focused, good, and when she looked up, the arm and the rift were gone. throughout her hatchling stage she visited this cave often, generally while the other dragons were asleep because she didn't need sleep, and each time she'd find a book or a set of runes on the cave floor. but she never saw that arm again.
at somepoint, the cave disappeared, and she wandered for weeks to try and find it again, but nothing. still as an adult she has no idea where it is. she's convinced fate wants her to know, and Cato rolls his eyes at her, but he doesn't discourage her--says it's better she's busing her time with something useful instead of incessantly asking questions or poking her nose into others' business.
she's not super great at her magic, but she's learning and she can feel there's more magic in her everyday, and that's all she can really say about that.
