Yaidunno

name is Yaidunno ("yeah I dunno"), but Yai for short. he was born at sea and named by drunken dragon pirates (he's heard the story more times then minutes he's been alive, probably), and has never felt comfortable leaving the sea, which sets him apart from other ridgies. he's never sure how to interact with other ridgebacks, a fact that helped him connect with CaptainCrosswalk because she was in the same boat (why would a dragon that couldn't fly ever leave the dirt they were born on?).

he's a little too gentle for the pirate life so he ended up with a snapper captain, who doesn't really do much but talk big and go on raids against Maren. he's nosy (HA! get it a male ridgie who's nosy *slaps knee*) and he's good at pulling information out of people, so he's one of the few actually able to comb through the steaming pile of crap CaptainCrosswalk constantly says.

pompous and overly concerned with his looks. like captaincrosswalk, he enjoys fine jewels and the delicate things in life, often going as far as to steal them from captaincrosswalk herself (*ahem* borrow). they don't stay in his possession for long, as captaincrosswalk will steal them back or he'll spend them on something finer. (or dragons that don't give him the time of day, but he tends to go for the gruff scary looking dragons who prefer he prove himself in battle than give them jewels and finery). he's definitely a bit of a yes-man and will instantly suck up to whoever he thinks is in power. he'd go as far as to say that captaincrosswalk is a friend, but his loyalty has never been trustworthy and even she knows that if she falters one bit he's going to go running off to whoever he was sucking up to last.

he's better at talking himself out of fights than actually fighting, which is all well and good. it hasn't worked so great with the maren captaincrosswalk likes so much, but he'll admit he finds it hilarious. even if he does end up stranded from the sea with captaincrosswalk while they figure out how to get a new boat.

STORY OF BIRTH:

when a mommy ridgeback and a daddy ridgeback love each other very much, they go nowhere near the water to lay their nest. except, for somehow laying an egg in a barrel of desert scrub in a ship's hold (yeah, everyone's at a loss for how that happened too, and being on a pirate ship Yai didn't get away with "maybe i'm a prince" stories for very long as a hatchling). a hungry tundra managed to knock the barrel over, which sent the egg rolling across the hold. the dragons on the ship laughed about it at first, but ended up taking turns caring for the egg.

until the faithful day that Yai was born.

it was shortly after a successful raid, and the pirates were well into their drink. Yai often wonders why he wasn't named winner or something cool like ace because he's a seafaring dragon of a breed that hates water c'mon and he was born right after something so good, but nope. the dragons were so drunk and happy that when asking each other what to name the little ridgie that poked his little head out of the shell, they shrugged and said, "Yeah I dunno." and it stuck. Thus little Yaidunno was born.
