He’d thought it would make a great joke: Everyone went on about how “permababies” were simply the sweetest things, but the scrolls for this transformation were quite costly. Merlin had thought, “What if someone made a temporary version of the scroll? Make someone think they were stuck in a child’s body, and then after five minutes...poof, back to normal!”

He wasn’t about to test this idea on other people, though—and besides, there wasn’t much use in sharing a punchline before the rest of the joke was ready. He gathered the ingredients himself: basilisk feathers, amaranth seeds, the powdered remnants of his own eggshell...

“And the potion’s ready! Down the hatch it goes....”

When the room stopped swirling, Merlin righted himself and looked at the mirror. He crowed in delight when he saw how he’d shrunk—from a young adult back to a tiny hatchling. “It worked, it worked! Let’s see how long it takes...”

He looked at his pocket watch. Five minutes later, he still wasn’t worried.

Ten minutes later, he definitely was.

Twenty minutes later, the cold butterflies of fear were fluttering in his stomach.

Thirty minutes...forty...

When Merlin’s colleagues returned from lunch, they were flabbergasted to find the hatchling wailing on the floor. They took him to more skilled healers and mages, but nothing could be done. Whatever Merlin had done to himself was permanent, and reversing it with a Scroll of Maturity was thought to be too risky.

It was a terrible blow to the young researcher. The joke, it seemed, was on him now. How would anybody take him and his work seriously?

It took Merlin a long time to come to terms with his new situation. He studied his previous experiment thoroughly, and while he didn’t find a way to reverse its effects, he did uncover some things that were of use to the medical community. Seeing them acknowledge his work lifted his spirits tremendously: Magic wasn’t dependent on size; after all, there were Veilspun sorcerers smaller than he was. He was stuck in a child’s body, but he still had an adult’s mind and skills—and he could still make good use of those.

Merlin soon began to see the possibilities of his new form: wriggling into small spaces, being able to manipulate more delicate tools, coaxing extra snacks from the kitchens...

And perhaps the best part: It seemed he really was eternally youthful. Suddenly Merlin had more time—all the time in the world!—to focus on his research. There were so many things to learn...

“And so many people to learn with!” he thought excitedly. It was a bright summer day, and the academy had just opened. The tiny Coatl noticed several new faces in the crowd, including a nervous-looking harpy.

“Harpies rarely come here to train. This fellow must be here in search of adventure!” And, sensing a kindred spirit, Merlin toddled up to him.

“Welcome to the academy, young fellow! I’m Merlin. What’s your name?”
