He could no longer recall the nature of his prisoner - neither its appearance nor its crime. The structure imprisoning his charge had been silent for a very long time. Its stone walls - once proud and firm - now crumbled, sun-cracked and overgrown with flora. It no longer required sentry. He knew this, but pretended he did not. He was a creature of habit. He had grown accustomed to the temperance of the Viridian Labyrinth; he didn't miss the biting cold of his birthplace. The forest was calm, and the foliage had grown to accommodate him. On an inconsequential sunny afternoon in the dappled light, he drifted into a comfortable sleep, and he did not awaken.

A thick coating of moss grew over him in patches, obscuring his original markings with its own verdant and tawny hues. Fungi of copious shapes and varieties thrived within the rich cornucopia of his muscle and viscera. Tenacious vines crept between gnarled horns, twisted, coiling from bone to bone. In the springtime, when the little mammals sheltered inside grew heavy with young, they found comfort within the warm safety of his chest, long since emptied of any obstructing organs.

His body ceased to be his own, but it did not die.

ETYMOLOGY - His name is long forgotten, if he ever had one. Observers simply refer to him as "the sentinel."
