Sornieth Worldbuilding Theories
Based on concepts from my World Page
Diversions From Canon
  • The deities do not currently physically exist. If they ever did, they did not create Sornieth or anything in it. Elemental magic exists, but the deities themselves are either widespread myths to explain natural forces or ancient dragons who started popular clans and are long since dead.
  • Exalting isn't immediately death, but since dragons are being sent into war untrained as soon as they're of age as cannon fodder, they're still basically being sacrificed. I'll occasionally use "exalt" to mean "kill" just to be snarky and edgy, but this isn't literal.
  • The Shade is currently active, but it isn't as powerful as it is in canon. It's a variant of animum which absorbs other variants and converts them into itself and is incapable of completely annihilating anything. This makes it a threat to animum-carrying beings, such as dragons, Beastclans, and wildlife, but not plants or inanimate objects. It's not sentient and Shadetouched dragons maintain their original personalities except when it takes control and they're motivated solely by the need to absorb animum.[/font]
  • Emperors are an incredibly rare occurrence resulting from the deaths of extremely powerful Imperials. The majority of Imperial clans are totally fine. Beyond first or second generation Imperials, which at this point are mostly dead (I consider dragons on inactive or locked accounts to be dead), most of them have diluted enough bloodlines that there's not enough animum to form Emperors. Forming them also requires large amounts of ambient animum in the land, which is currently being used by Luminax. Really, because they require so much power, only one Emperor can ever exist at a time.
  • All standard dragons are in the size range of 6-15 feet long (1.82 to 4.57 meters) snout-vent. Their positions within that basically align with canon.
  • Dragons of different species breed via combining their animum. Same-species couples can either combine animum or literally do the birds and bees thing, the latter of which results in more genetic variation. Same-sex couples can produce children, it's just not possible in game for out-of-universe game mechanic reasons because this is a breeding sim.
  • Especially in reference to social conventions, the breed personalities described in canon are either stereotypes or only the case in the most traditional of clans or clanless wild populations. Most dragons of any given breed don't act like that, or even if they do, it's to a much more subdued degree.

How Does Stuff Work?
  • Everything "magical" in Sornieth functions via animum, as described in the "How?" section of my world page. Sornieth is a higher-animum dimension than Neopia's dimension or Veritas, which means that animum-based bodily modifications, manifestations in the form of energy blasts or breath weapons, and dimensional rifts are relatively common.
  • Dragon eggs are influenced by nearby animum, which determines hatchlings' eye colors. Eye types like Glowing, Multi-Gaze, and Primal are the result of more animum flowing into a dragon than they can naturally handle, resulting in unusual results. In most cases, primal-eyed dragons die quickly, but if they're properly acclimated to their adjusted animum levels they can live healthy and productive lives. Dragons who use vials to gain special eyes usually need months of readjustment therapy so they don't burn out.
  • The Coliseum is a game mechanic that doesn't literally represent anything dragons do. It metaphorically represents dragons hunting for food and resources by way of hunting down and yes, occasionally killing, the local wildlife. Dragons do periodically fight with local Beastclan populations, but this is usually strictly diplomatic and they usually don't eat sentient beings. Dragon/Beastclan conflict operates on a strictly local scale outside of fringe extremist groups and most interactions are diplomatically negotiated and reasonably cordial.
  • Other than the Bogsneak mutagen, which Baldwin created via Weird Science, gene and breed changes don't exist in-universe, even though eye vials do. A dragon's eyes are more determined by animum than the rest of them and can be more easily altered after birth than genes or breed. Gene and breed change items as they appear in game are a metaphor for intervention by supernatural forces. In the case of the Hewn Suburbs, Enforcer can use their powers to alter dragons' appearances, breeds, and personalities and rewrite all dragons involved's memories to make it as though they always looked like that. If the dragon Enforcer altered was very emotionally attached to their previous state, sometimes there can be "glitches" resulting in them still remembering their previous state, even though no one else does.
  • Sornieth's dimension is linked to at least 3 others: the Nightcored Realm, Neopia's dimension, and wherever the Forbidden Portal goes. There might be others, like wherever Endmaker's from, but they haven't been studied. Rifts to the Nightcored Realm and Neopia's dimension are not currently open, but can be with focus. Since dragons are reasonably high-animum creatures, opening rifts is relatively easy compared to other dimensions. The Forbidden Portal's rift is open, which isn't really good for anyone. Augmentation also runs over it.

While at first drawn to SeriousLightClan, I kept going back to WorldBuilder. I really like the color combo, and it's rare these days to see circuit used well. The concept is also super fun.
