Monych joins the clan as a hatchling, and he realizes early in life that something is not right here. As he grows older, it becomes clear that Hemlock is the center of the clan's corruption. To Monych, it is equally clear that he would not be able to defeat Hemlock, nor sway his followers away from him. Viewing resistance as a dangerous waste of time, Monych decides to devote himself to Hemlock's cause instead, hoping that his loyalty will see him spared when the worst comes to pass. He regards Hemlock's enemies with derision and open contempt.

When Cilla decides, with her advisors, that Monych should be mated to Irelia, he goes along with it complacently. It's not until they spend more time together that he realizes she follows Hemlock not out of fear but faith. Her loyalty sparks conflicted feelings in him, which he firmly ignores.
