Irelia is born to Vivianne and Styx, a pair of powerful witches. She learns from a young age how to mix potions, weave charms, and cast enchantments. She is repeatedly cautioned not to draw her energy from the stars, a restriction that is backed up by Vivianne's worsening condition.

But no matter how well she understands their caution, Irelia cannot resist her curiosity. The stars call out to her, their bright points of light reaching across the sky to be closer to her. She pulls in their energy simply by looking at them, syphoning it as if aided by magnetism. No matter how she tries to tell herself that it would be better to avert her gaze, she can't bring herself to do it.

Finally, just as Irelia is about to reach maturity, a shooting star arcs above the lair. She takes wing without thinking, following its trail even as her siblings try to call her back to the ground. What she finds where the star fell only cements what she always knew: they're calling to her.

Irelia hears the pained cries of the stars, themselves under attack from all sides. Sympathetic to their plight, she's determined to bring their energy to the relative safety of Sornieth. She is trying to sway more dragons to her cause, even as her mothers caution against it.

She finds a powerful ally in Hemlock. As they influence each other, they hatch a plan: to open the Forbidden Portal wider, creating an escape route for the celestial bodies themselves. But the voices that call to her may not be so helpless as they seem.
