Sorrel is a vain and flashy young coatl. He underwent significant recoloration, under Venia's guidance. Unlike many of her patients, he didn't end up succumbing to the curse of thorns spreading through the clan. Unfortunately, his taste for shiny things did not leave him so unscathed. His new set of jewelry was giving him terrible nightmares, even in waking life. This problem was solved by Hemlock's Blessing, a process that converts magical afflictions into usable energy. Sorrel now finds that he has greater magical reserves than he knows what to do with, as well as a new talent: the ability to inflict nightmares on others.

He has no official mate in the clan, but he's been courting Evrain ever since the younger coatl arrived in the clan. Evrain is engaged to Morpha, who is only passively interested in him, and far prefers the exaggerated displays of affection from Sorrel. They've asked Cilla many times to let them be official mates, but she refuses, insisting that Evrain and Morpha will grow to be a good match over time. Sorrel resents her firm decision, but doesn't see much else wrong with her leadership. As Evrain grows more nervous and dissatisfied, Sorrel wonders if his thinking is really grounded in reality.
