Stars spun. Voids churned. The light and darkness mingled with each other, liquid, formless. Before Sorienth, before the shadow had a being to bind it- Gaze was created.

Or, more accurately, coalesced into being. The pull of atoms and the forces between them were without balance. They crashed into each other again and again until slender bones began to take shape.

Muscles curved and tied the bones together, and skin pulled tight over his form. Fins sprouted from his head and paws. The remaining stars and atoms and liquid matter converged into two sweeping canvases- these would be his wings. Loose particulate matter continued to swirl around him, drawn in by some force at his core. The particles tighten and loosen, taking the shape of sashes with the appearance of fabric.

Gaze tested his wings, which proved strong. He tested his pink eyes, which saw well. His talons had nothing to grip into, but they flexed powerfully. Delighted with this new idea, this new experience of consciousness and being alive, he sought out others in the same position. Who else was new to the world? Who else was made of swirling stars?

When he found Sorienth, the kinship he sought was surprisingly few. A scattered grouping of others had also been created, but the staggering majority of dragons had been born from a clutch, having both parents and a clan to call their own.

It was no matter, though. Gaze soon discovered he had an ability that no one else did- he could manipulate others and speak thoughts into their mind. He was not careful with this ability- for what did the disciplines and rules of other dragons have over something created miles above them? Who would hold him, in prison or in law? What was there to fear?

So he was rampant. Cities and towns churned into chaos with residents left in confusion, only with the vague memory of a dragon with bright eyes and colorful wings. A description which, thankfully for Gaze, could be easily applied to half of Sorienth.

He took joy in traveling. Seeking out the far and wide corners of the earth and stealing what he wished from the dragons within. Sometimes he would simply steal physical things, to adorn himself with or toss away, for the thrill of the game itself. Other times he would seek after the formless- he would steal friendships, alliances, the feeling of safety and certainty.

The most difficult thing was finding their want. Gaze could just as easily manipulate one dragon to the next, but for any high-stakes, dramatic coercions- such as murder, betrayal, hysteria- he needed to know what they wanted. It was easy for animals and beasts of the land- they only wanted food, or to mate, or to belong. A number of dragons were similarly simple-minded but the ones that were the most fun to manipulate had higher desires.

Sometimes it was power, or the idea of being seen in power. Gaze could sneak through balcony windows, into massive castles, and coerce kings into handing over gifts and estates. Over time, it was easier for him to determine want and motive.

They were bound to take notice. The elders, the deities of Sorienth. How was Gaze to know of their existence? He thought the musings and ideas of other dragons to all be nonsense. But they would not stand for chaos amidst all the realms. They would not stand for someone so reckless, so careless towards others and the havoc in his wake. Something would have to be done.

They lured him into a trap- set a high official pearlcatcher to give a speech, the whole town gathered below to watch. How could Gaze resist? With such possibility for mayhem?

He was seized from all sides. Bound by imperials and beings larger than him. Placed in a dungeon, trapped, given speech after speech by tome-welding magicians who scolded him for his childish and dangerous ways. Dragons have died because of you, they told him. Don’t you realize how horrible you are?

They were sent from the Shadowbinder, they told him. To teach him a powerful lesson.

Days? Weeks? Later, Gaze opened his eyes, but he could not see. He could feel something liquid spilling from his skull. It wasn’t painful. It didn’t hurt. But he could feel it. This was his punishment.
Underneath his wings, among the dusty feathers, many new eyes opened. One hovered over his head. These eyes he could see from. In many directions at once. Gaze could even see his first eyes, the ones open and dripping. With black liquid that moved slower than water, entrancing, leaking out from his old eyes but never seeming to reach the ground.

The changing of his eyes was meant to be a punishment. The black sludge was meant to horrify him and remind him of the power the Shadowbinder carried. The scattered placement of his new magenta eyes was meant to disorient him and prevent him from further dangerous antics.
Gaze, of course, adapted.

With his new eyes, it was much easier to spy oncoming attacks. With his frontal eye, Gaze found it to be remarkably efficient at channeling his powers. He practiced first on the creatures scattered around the edges of the elemental realms. Dragons that had gone insane, creatures that were lost, things that creeped on the ground and flew in the sky.

With concentration, he could do it again. Provoke packs of wolves to turn on each other, whispering rumors of traitors into their ears. Convince birds that the seed they sought was lodged in the sky, making them fly straight up until they fainted from lack of air and plummeted back down for an easy snack.

Transitioning back to manipulating dragons would be difficult. Especially with his eyes. He would have to be adept at starting from afar and having control before approaching them to speak. While Gaze could blend in with a crowd if he wanted to, especially other dragons in the Starfall Isles, gaining their trust was harder with his eyes and the swirling banners that circled him.

But Gaze was determined, and he would find a way.
