Hiding in the Shadows
Hiding in the Shadows

You travel even deeper into Codex’s lair, to reach what seems to be the deepest part of the complex. At first, you see nothing. Just a neat room stacked with all kinds of supplies. Only when I mention seeing something move in the corner, you notice her too. A Pearlcatcher, quietly cleaning her pearl, sat in a dark corner of the room. She stares at us. Unmoving. Silently. You introduce yourself, and I introduce myself. She still says nothing. We both wait patiently for her to speak up, but she finishes cleaning her pearl before even addressing us. “Welcome, I know Codex allowed you two in.”, she says. She gets up and walks over towards us. “My name is Wraith. And I wouldn’t even be found if the little girl didn’t see me.” You nod and compliment Wraith on her skills, noting that you’re not easy to fool. I’m not sure about that, but I wisely stay silent. Wraith, however, seems not too sure either. “You’d be surprised how many dragons say that about themselves.”, she remarks. “But thanks for the compliment. I appreciate it, truly.”
You look around the room that we’re in. What even is all of this stuff? Just supplies, or are there hidden treasures here? Wraith shrugs. “Mostly just supplies, I don’t hoard items like the others.”, she replies. “There’s some interesting fungi growing here though, right behind that shelf over there.” She points at a shelf that’s stocked with all kinds of pickled foods, and instead of warning her about the health risks of fungi this close to food, you ask to see the blasted things! Wraith’s entire demeanor immediately changes though, and there’s a childlike excitement on her face as she leads us to the fungi. A weird spot of moldy spores, dark purple in color. “Don’t worry, they don’t seem to be dangerous for us, I tested it.”, Wraith proudly tells us, and neither of us dares to ask how she tested that. She’s a Nature dragon, she probably knows more of these things than we do. “I’ve never seen these fungi outside of Cermestro, so I’m trying to see if they can be used for anything.” You mention maybe taking some of it to the Nature district to show to a herbologist or something, and Wraith shakes her head. “I tried, but taking it into the sun doesn’t work, it immediately shrivels up. And I can’t bring anybody here, of course.” You nod, deep in thought. Codex obviously doesn’t want any citizens here. But this is a mystery, and you can’t resist a good mystery. After thinking on it for a moment. Then, you mention the idea of finding a magical item to keep the spores safe in while outside. You even add that maybe Yafu could help Wraith look for something, as she has a good eye for magical items. Wraith considers it for a second or two, before hurrying to the stairs to grab her coworker. Within minutes, Wraith has pulled Yafu down and towards the fungi. “I want to get this examined in the city, but I need a magical item that shields it from sunlight, do you think you can find something like that for me?” Yafu’s eyes light up with excitement. “I do! I’ll help you find something to keep the mold safe in!” The two of them immediately start planning the whole operation, and you let them, happily waiting for them to be done before stating that you still exist and all that. “Ah Oscar, thank you for your assistance. Codex truly has good eye for who is worth our time.”, Wraith states. You agree that Codex has good eyes, though you definitely mean something different. Neither Wraith nor Yafu seems to pick up on it though. Lucky you. “The little one doesn’t speak much, does she?”, Wraith then asks, and I instinctively hide behind your leg. You explain that most citizens don’t see me, and that I’m not used to talking for myself. You also add that I’m a great transcriber and have been of invaluable help for the team. That’s so nice of you! “Well, if I ever need to have something transcribed, I’ll ask you for help kid!”, Wraith exclaims. “Maybe those fungi… Who knows whatever comes from our little research adventure…” You nod in excitement, and happily offer to help whenever needed. Of course, I do the same. Who knows, maybe those fungi are the key to solving this mystery! |

Wraith is known to be a surreptitious, crafty dragon. She is not normally seen, and that's how she likes it. There have been many expectations placed on her because of her family's power, but she just wants to do her own thing. Only her mothers can find her once she hides in the shadows. As soon as she could leave the lair on her own, she joined the expedition group to gain some freedom from their eyes. She wanted to see if it's easier to make friends that way, but her legacy always interfered. Wraith took to traveling among the shadows and inadvertently trained her power with them more and more. She also became more in tune with the nature side of of her powers by learning about all the herbs, fungi, and magical plants she could find. Now that she has explored the Nature domain, she's ready to explore the Shadow domain to expand her knowledge and power, and maybe even her friend group.
