Deephaze was a Fire dragon, once upon a time. It is impossible to call it any normal kind of dragon now. The orange of their eyes is a thin lie. It's taken in enough magic that its magic comes out in a thin, hazy cloud of sickly green miasma around her body. The smell of rot emanates from his scales, despite their perfectly buffed sheen. Rats crawl up and down her body. It is a monument to wrongness: the immortality theory, turned into little more than reanimation. Despite the multitude of bodiless souls screaming in his mind, Deephaze is still sharply intelligent. There are vestiges of the mage she used to be. He's just made himself the container for so much more, dragging his body along for the two-century ride. If Deephaze were to stop taking in new souls every few months, there's no doubt it would rot in a matter of weeks. Walking through the marsh at night has never been more dangerous. |

Long ago, in another life, Deephaze was a mage. The kind of mage respected enough to have protegees and plans. Only dear Basilica remembers those days. She's the protegee who has stood the test of time. She's the one who had the idea to come to Nature, the cradle of Life, to more easily carve souls from bodies. It's something like the principle of the Shade-touched... but instead of introducing a new mind to a vessel, the soul is pulled away and the vessel left abandoned. By taking on everything- the magic, the memories, the baggage of each soul- Deephaze is able to ration out the pure life-energy to his followers. She is a container stretched thin around the seeping sewage-fluid of a thousand lives of random refuse. His generosity makes him the leader he is. The GOD THAT HE IS. Her thralls owe more than just immortality to him, after all. By putting some of that chaotic brew of spare magic into their empty vessels, he has created life anew. She is no deity... but she certainly plays the way they do. Deephaze just can't let this city cut off its supply. They have a cult to maintain and a self to keep intact. |
