Deephaze and Basilica treat Compactor as little more than a bottomless pit. They found it lost in the swamp, bogged down in the muck and so emaciated that its flesh seemed shrink-wrapped to its bones.
It was willing to eat one of their spare bodies, so they fed it.
And fed it.

It's clearly not a normal dragon. It doesn't speak- it doesn't really do anything but eat.
To Deephaze and Basilica, it's a living body pit. They have no idea that it doesn't only hunger for the dead.
