ehehe i’m writing my own description!!

(with supervision of course. i understand why but also it’s lame.)

my name is vortex. i am what the scientists here call “a weird-looking monster”. i used to live within the depths of the dark shadowy place, eating mushrooms and other fungi, when suddenly the scientists guys captured me and brought me to this very cold place! i always wanted to go on vacation, but if it were up to me i’d have chosen somewhere with more mushrooms.

at first they kept me in a cell. i wanted to leave, but scientists ignored me and instead asked a lot of questions, like “what are you” (i’m a vortex!) and “were you once a dragon” (no that’d be dumb, dragons can’t do cool things like shapeshift) and “wait you’re a shapeshifter” (ye). eventually they start asking questions because they want to see how smart i am, mostly maths stuff. i guess they thought i was dumb cuz they were surprised at how much i knew about it.

(Supervisor’s Note: We gave Vortex simple addition and subtraction questions. Eventually, we had tried to give him more complex problems, such as multiplication and questions where the answer is a negative number, which he struggled with. Overall, we had come to the conclusion that he had the intelligence of a child, but this is moreso due to a lack of education than anything else, which… admittedly did surprise us.)

one day, scientists show me picture of dragon crowd and ask me to count all the dragons. i counted 24, and scientists say “that’s wrong, there are 22 dragons” and counted them all. i said “wait you missed 2” and pointed at the ones they missed, and they were confused.

they ask me to describe 2 dragons, so i do. they are very confused. they leave to talk and send me back to cell. later they come back and say they couldn’t see 2 dragons on photo, are you lying? i said no, and they showed me more photos and asked the same questions. they kept not seeing some dragons, and eventually they said they want to study me more and figure out what’s happening.

ok.

we kept doing the counting test, and eventually they said they realized what was happening. they say i comprehend different worlds and see them at the same time. i didn’t know that was a weird thing so i was confused.

Vortex knew the entire time that he had this ability, it seems. If what he has written is to be believed, then he had just assumed anyone could.)

they ask me to help with some projects, and in return they’d give me anything within reason. i say okay, then can i have clothes because it’s very cold here. they gave me a lab coat. i said it is still cold, so a nice galvan dragon showed me many scarves and let me keep one. now i am a scientist!

so that is my backstory. now my abilities. i am a shapeshifter, which means i can make myself look different if i want to. i have to keep orange chitin and black scales and purple eyes though. i also see other sornieths better than everyone else! one last ability, i can eat a lot, just like my name. scientists say that’s not an ability but it is! it took a lot of arguments to let them let me write that here. appreciate it.

so that’s it! first ever description of a monster in the lab written by the monster!

the scientists want me to write about different sornieths, so i will do that.

so you see different dragons every day, right? what if i told you some of them were from another dimension!

one day you talk to a dragon, and they say things that make sense at first but in hindsight actually don’t make sense. they say things like “i come from the clan of hot fire” but then you go home and look up clan of hot fire and it doesn’t exist! and then you try to go find the dragon again and the dragon doesn’t exist! that’s because there are thousands of different sornieths in thousands of different realities, and they overlap a lot usually!

for example, many if not all sornieths have this cold place. however, all sornieths have different places inside the cold place. there are sprawling cities in some, fishing towns in others, and also a weird creepy cult thing in one. not only that, but many dragons are different too! maybe there’s no such thing as two of the same dragon. i haven’t seen any that’s for sure!

that’s why you gotta be careful when talking to strangers! you’ll ask them “where is the nearest town” and they’ll say “go to the west!” but in reality their nearest town is west and yours is actually east.

also weird is that dragons in the same spot are usually from the same sornieth. private houses and stuff are usually filled with same sornieth dragons while public spots tend to have different sornieth dragons.

so that’s sornieths!

I have done my fair share of research on Vortex, and my suspicions were correct.

From what I have gathered, just as there are variations of different locations in different versions of Sornieth, there are different variations of the Shade. Some are a lot more benign or more sapient than others, and our Sornieth essentially drew the short straw and got the near-mindless corruption we knew and love. Now, onto the subject.

Vortex is the Shade, but a different version of one.

There is a world where the Shade, rather than being a corruption seeping into the minds of dragons, is a writhing, beast-spawning mass that spews vaguely draconic creatures, either from itself or from other dragons, and Vortex is one of said beasts. I am not sure if he is aware of this.

His affable nature implies that either, in one world, the Shade is capable of creating fully sapient creatures that can decide for themselves, or that Vortex is a mastermind, posing as a good guy before striking.

That doesn’t matter to me.

I’ll be doing more research on Vortex. Things just got very interesting.

Lorewise, Vortex has written all of the spoiler notices on my fandragon's bios, if they have one. One day, he broke into Dr. Galvan’s notes and started writing about “spoiled words”, and when she asked what that meant, he said he had no clue but he felt like someone else would find it useful.
