Tanager is the only dragon who knows Finch is sick... but it's getting difficult to keep it that way. The move from Edge-Harbor to the Lowlands as soon as her daughters reached adulthood was a very strategic one: Marquess is rich as all hell, he can ensure their safety just fine, and they shouldn't have to know that their mother is technically dying. Even down here among the more Nature-connected dragons, arguing that being covered in mushrooms is an aesthetic choice is hard. It's even harder when the hyphae are beginning to visibly snake through Finch's body, carving out bald patches in her fur and veiny networks under her skin. It hurts all the time. But Finch's magic has never been stronger- when she's not depleting it trying to keep the mushrooms from consuming more of her. The theory that incorporating Nature into herself would focus her Nature powers was a good one. And now she just has to keep Nature from eating her alive. |

Finch does have the mushrooms under control! She totally does. She just... needs to figure out the last few bits. To. Keep them under control. The experiment was supposed to be a very sound one: Finch was already a powerful Nature mage, but being surrounded by Nature makes her more powerful. How much stronger would she get if she connected Nature to herself in the form of a contained colony of mushrooms? She was right. Her magic loves the mushrooms. ...The mushrooms also love her, though. Too much. Her magic feeds them, makes them far more adventurous than they normally would be. And much more willing to consume living flesh. Finch has given up the losing battle of fighting most of the symptoms. Her fur is getting patchy, and hyphae snake under the skin. She's wrapped her thin limbs in leather and burlap to hide where skin and muscle have been eaten away. One of her eyes is dangerously close to being consumed by the patch of mushrooms on her snout, and she keeps her hat lowered to hide the damage. Finch won't die. She can't. But she's glad her daughters can't see her like this in the meantime. |
