Raktah is the original dragon of the Blackmoon bloodline, and is a blood relative to many of the clan's powerful dragons, including their deceased leader, Overseer Austere. In her younger years Raktah was known as the Battlemistress, the highest-ranking female warrior in the clan. She has now retired from war, but she is just as fierce and she always was, and in addition to strength she now carries the invaluable wisdom of the hardened veteran.
Her current job is to supervise the warriors when they are training. She can often be found barking criticism at them.
Raktah originally came from Frigid Floes. When she left her home as a young guardian to go on the Search, she felt inclined to travel towards the Tangled Wood. There in Foxfire Bramble she found her change; a large underground lair, totally unoccupied. This lair became the home of the Blackmoon Clan.
With incredible strength of spirit, Raktah allows nothing to stand in her way. Though she's more serious by nature, she lightens up around good company but has some difficulty interpreting the emotions of others. She is extremely domineering and was once quite physically aggressive, though she has learned to temper her violence over the years; her mouth, however, remains untamed. She says exactly what's on her mind and shows no fear of expressing her opinions. If you come to her for advice she will hand it to you in a brutally honest "tough love" fashion, which may hurt to hear, but it will be true all the same.
Raktah's strong personality can make it difficult for her to form friendships, though some admire her straightforward honesty, and those she welcomes with open arms. Overall, making friends isn't much of a priority of hers. When hanging out and drinking with her buddies, Raktah will welcome in any dragon who can handle her strong personality, but she is quite content with the close companions she does have so it doesn't bother her in the slightest when a dragon dislikes her attitude.
She once had a mate, an equally strong-spirited guardian named Zephox. The pair had a very powerful relationship, and when their energies were combined they were nearly unstoppable. Unfortunately, Zephox died in combat at the hands of the enemy. Raktah mourned his death by retiring from her job as a warrior to become a treasurer and an Elder.
She still seeks revenge on the dragon who killed him.
The History of the Blackmoon Family
As with all guardians, when she came of age her instincts urged her to go on The Search. Her journey lead her to the Tangled Wood, specifically Foxfire Bramble, where on the night of a new moon she found found her Charge; the faint dark light of the moon fell on the entrance to a huge, ancient, underground lair. From that day on Raktah made the lair her home, and she took the surname Blackmoon as a reminder of that glorious night.
While out hunting one day, Raktah met Zephox Lamplight, a guardian from the Sunbeam Ruins who was on the hunt for his own Charge. The two quickly became friends, then partners; and before long they were raising their first nest of hatchlings. The eldest, a pitch-black male who they named Azshar Blackmoon, showed plenty of potential even from a young age. The couple focused most of their attention on him and it payed off. By the time Azshar was ready to leave for his own Search her was strong-bodied, strong-willed, and well-educated. He had a steady mate, Ylva Wolfmist, who had found her Charge by accident at a very young age; so she decided to join him on his quest. The two headed off to the Starfall Isles, which Azshar felt so drawn to. It was there that they met The Shadebound.
They didn't call themselves the Shadebound; it was a title given to them by other dragons who feared them. No, they had no name. You couldn't even accurately call them a clan -- they were more of a cult, if anything. Azshar and Ylva would never have joined them if they had felt they had any other option... but they had traveled so far, and they were tired and hungry, and afraid of all the strange, alien creatures they had already encountered on the islands. And these shady dragons seemed so eager to learn their Shadow magic... so Azshar and Ylva joined the Shadebound for resources, for protection, and in exchange they offered the secrets of their magic.
While staying with the Shadebound Azshar and Ylva probably learned more secrets than they shared. The inner workings of the cult were slowly revealed to Azshar, and every day he became more and more afraid for his life and the life of his mate; but they both knew that they were in too deep to leave now. They had to keep playing the game; and they played it well. Azshar earned the trust of the cult leaders, Roujia Starspeaker and Jaxon Sunscorn, so much so that they even informed him when they had began to hear rumors of revolution. Azshar kept his excitement hidden; he knew this was their opportunity to be free.
Azshar sought out the leader of the revolution, a pearlcatcher named Kyomi Solemnwind, and he became her greatest ally and informant; the trust he earned with the leaders allowed him to provide Kyomi with insider knowledge. The two spread the word of change, of revolution, and most of the members of the Shadebound took their side. Largely thanks to Azshar's contributions, the Revolution was a success and Azshar and Kyomi were voted to lead the newly-formed clan.
On that very night of the successful Revolution, the clan's oracle, Kyomi's mother Kaiyo, received a vision. The saw the birth, the life, and the death of a pitch-black skydancer who she knew would one day rule the clan.
A few days later, Azshar and his mate Ylva hatched a single female guardian, black as night, who the parents named Austere Blackmoon. Though she was no skydancer, Kaiyo knew this was the clan's destined leader.
Sure enough, the bold hatchling guardian was leader-material. Kaiyo told the new parents of her vision, and they were ecstatic. Azshar devoted his time to raising his daughter as a leader, and sure enough, she was a natural at it. Despite being a guardian, she never went on the Search. It was obvious from day one that the Blackmoon Clan, named in her honor, was her Charge. This only became more obvious over time.
Austere took the throne at a very young age (about 15 in human years) and made many mistakes along the way, but she proved herself to be a worthy leader. In the end though, one of these mistakes cost Austere her life.
She knew her death was coming; Elder Kaiyo had warned her ahead of time, told her which signs to look out for. The end was approaching more quickly than she had anticipated. Knowing that she had to choose a successor or risk losing the clan to another bloodline, Sombre turned to an acquaintance for advice - the wise gatekeeper Raavyn Scarredlich. Unknown to anyone in the clan, including Sombre, Raavyn also experienced visions, and she too knew this day would come.
Just as Kaiyo had predicted the first leader, the founder of the clan, so Abysma gave prophecy of their second leader. Also unknown to the clan, Abysma was not a dragon but a protector spirit, created specifically to protect the Blackmoon Clan; and she was also the natural enemy of the chaotic spirit that was about to destroy Blackmoon. Abysma knew that this new leader would be exactly what they needed to save the clan from utter destruction.
Austere died a martyr; she sacrificed her own life to save the clan. However, she paid for her mistakes not just with her own life, but the lives of others. The War of Chaos killed about two-thirds of the clan. All seemed hopeless, until she stepped up from the ashes of ruin. Sombre Blackmoon, daughter of Austere, was ready to take on the challenge of leadership.
(( In the future: Sombre becomes a compassionate, fair leader - one with a stern side who knows when to put her claw down. Unlike her mother she does not discriminate against any breeds or flights, and the clan's population becomes much more diverse. She does, however, look down upon the weak-willed, and anyone who fails to contribute to the clan and provide for their self is exiled. Thankfully, Sombre is great at inspiring her followers at putting them to use based on their individual skills and talents. ))
