Joy is an angelic creature, borne of Heaven and sent to Sornieth to purify the lands with his husband Comfort. They were both sanctioned at a secluded area to begin their work.

Joy is leisurely, and as such took his time making his way to the Outskirts to begin his task. His husband rushed ahead of him, but he wasn't too stressed, knowing that Comfort was far more steadfast and durable than he was.
When he arrived, he found his partner and some of the settlers making conversation.
This was strange to him, because he'd never really stopped to consider that maybe, these settlers were not in need of purification. Being told to purge the lands had registered in his head as purging the dragons living there, too, but clearly these were sentient and noble creatures - he couldn't find it in himself to carry out the plan. He chose instead to make the lands inhabitable, with his husband.

As an angel, Joy is very noble and regal. He isn't as forgiving as his partner, and instead delves into territories of righteous anger and smiting. Many fear him, but he doesn't wish to be feared - he only wants to be respected. Few hail him as perfection, which registers as neutral to him, as he is far above the temptations of Ego.

He has the ability to create life, and his partner has the ability to purify it (especially plant life). Joy likes to help Comfort garden, occasionally creating new flowers in his garden or making idle plants grow tall (he doesn't tell him about it, though). He strongly admires his partner's willingness to give to others and defends him enthusiastically if his integrity is questioned.

Joy likes to think he's okay with hatchlings, but will begrudgingly admit he's not perfect. He thinks he's far too brooding and tall to make nice with any of them, and so he instead lionizes his partner as he plays with them and takes them on adventures.
Rarely, Joy is spoken to by the young ones, and in those cases he tries to provide them with life wisdom (which is always very good, because... he's an angel). His knack for advice and virtue has netted him strong friendships with Lucilius and Liriel.
